General Practice (Sector General omnibus #3) by James White is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
At Sector General, anything can happen-and frequently does. In this vast hospital in the depths of space, the thousands of staff, human and alien both, have a single mission: to care for all patients, of all species. For decades, these dramas of humanity and humor have commanded a following among science fiction readers. Now, in a single omnibus, the seventh and eighth volumes of the series-Code Blue: Emergency and The Genocidal Healer-return to print, along with an introduction by John Clute.
Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
Before becoming one of today's most intriguing and innovative mystery writers, Kate Wilhelm was a leading writer of science fiction, acclaimed for classics like The Infinity Box and The Clewiston Test.
Now one of her most famous novels returns to print, the spellbinding story of an isolated post-holocaust community determined to preserve itself, through a perilous experiment in cloning. Sweeping, dramatic, rich with humanity, and rigorous in its science, Where Later the Sweet Birds Sang is widely regarded as a high point of both humanistic and "hard" SF, and won SF's Hugo Award and Locus Award on its first publication. It is as compelling today as it was then.
Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang is the winner of the 1977 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Tangled Up in Blue (The Snow Queen Cycle) by Joan D. Vinge is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
Joan D. Vinge returns to Tiamat, the world of her Hugo Award-winning novel The Snow Queen and its bestselling sequel The Summer Queen.
Set during the time of The Snow Queen, BZ Gundhalinu is a by-the-book "Blue" on the trail of high corruption within the force. When a police raid goes horribly awry, BZ finds himself teamed up with Nyx LaisTree, a hard-nosed cop with no respect for the rules, and Devony Seaward, a beautiful hooker with a heart of gold. Together these three must fight the corruption of Tiamat and try to expose it before they all end up dead.
This novel marks the exciting return to the much-loved Snow Queen Universe. While taking place during events in The Snow Queen, this novel is a stand-alone masterpiece of noir suspense--taking a story you think you know, and showing you just how deep and vast the waters really run.

Ice (Pushkin Press Classics) by Anna Kavan is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
**This dystopian science fiction classic details the hallucinatory hunt for a white-haired girl, through a frozen, post-apocalyptic landscape

“A strange and compelling classic of dystopian and climate fiction, one that with foreboding and deep compassion maps the psyche and the terrain of dislocation” – Jeff VanderMeer**

Anticipating climate fiction and the New Weird literary genre, while garnering fans from Doris Lessing and J.G. Ballard to China Miéville and Patti Smith since it was first published in 1967, this fantasia about predatory male sexual behavior during an apocalyptic climate catastrophe reads as though author Anna Kavan had seen the future.

Ice is slowly covering the entire globe; as the glacial tide creeps forward, the fabric of society begins to break down. Through this chaotic landscape, a nameless narrator hunts for the white-haired girl he once loved - or perhaps wishes to annihilate. Battling a powerful enemy known only as the Warden, he travels through nightmarish and ever-shifting scenes, where the object of his obsession remains constantly just out of reach. She is guarded by the Warden and by a cruel older woman who wishes her ill – but each time the narrator seems poised to rescue her the encroaching ice wreaks violence on her fragile body, or his own base nature sends him hurtling onward in his kaleidoscopic pursuit. Again and again the girl appears, but inevitably she eludes him.

This dystopian classic, the last book Anna Kavan published in her lifetime, renders her apocalyptic vision of environmental devastation and possessive violence in unforgettable, propulsive, oneiric prose.

EDIT:
There are LOADS of "James White", so this is the correct one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_White_(author)

Ahhh, Anna Kavan. She's an incredible writer who probed the psychological depths of her 'disturbed' characters.

A wonderful writer!

The Rippers Son by Richard Phillips

https://www.amazon.com/Rippers-Son-R.../dp/B0F88LXQF1

The author is offering a free copy from 7th November through 11th November 2025.

The Rippers Son is part of the larger Rho Agenda series, one of my favourite series and well worth a read. It picks up after the final events of The Meridian Ascent being the 9th book in the series.

Wow, for once there's a bundle where I have most of the books already. Note that this particular bundle is redeemed through Kobo, so you must have a Kobo account to buy it. This is not a direct EPUB download from Humble Bundle itself.

While I liked the first Wool novella, I found the rest of the stories (confusingly compiled into a work also named Wool) not as compelling, so I didn't bother with Shift and Dust. I did get break down and get all of them when the three book omnibus was on sale a bit ago, so maybe someday I'll try the other two and see what I think.

The writing is breezier than Stephenson. They're very different style wise.

Thornyhold by Mary Stewart is $1 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
The rambling house called Thornyhold is like something out of a fairy tale.

Left to Gilly Ramsey by the cousin whose occasional visits brightened her childhood, the cottage, set deep in a wild wood, has come just in time to save her from a bleak future.

With its reputation for magic and its resident black cat, Thornyhold offers Gilly more than just a new home. It offers her a chance to start over...

Curl up by the fire and get ready to be transported in this magical, escapist read by the Queen of the Romantic Mystery.
