Kobo Conversion Error

I am trying to use Calibre to convert a Kobo book to epub. I have been able to do this successfully. However, recently I have been getting error messages saying the conversion failed. The Kobo Obok DeDRM shows the book and I can import it into Calibre successfully. However, I'm getting a failure error on conversion. I am posting the error details. Hopefully, someone smarter than me can figure out why it's failing. Thanks in advance.

Is The Golden Chance by Jayne Ann Krentz the correct title/author?

I grabbed that book and it was already a calibre conversion which was then run through Kobo's pipeline to add the various spans, etc. that are involved in creating a kepub. I did run it through a full calibre epub to epub conversion but didn't see any errors. The only possibility I could see is if this was a downloaded sample file.

What I am not sure of is why you are doing the full calibre conversion? If you want to get rid of the kepub bits and bobs, you can use the ModifyePub plugin with the Strip Kobo DRM Remnants option ticked. Faster and less intrusive.

First off, you are not using the current version of calibre. The second issue is that you downloaded the KePub version when you should have downloaded the ePub version.

On the Kobo website, select My Account and then Books. Find the cover of the book you want. Then select the three dots and then download. If the eBook has DRM you will get the ACSM file to use with the DeACSM plugin or Adobe Digital Editions. If the book has no DRM, you will download the ePub.

Jon, could you list the differences between a kepub and an ePub when the Kobo bits and bobs have been stripped from the kepub? With special attention to any differences that will make a visible difference while reading?

I apologize to you both. I didn't get a notification on your posts. DNSB, yes, the author is Jayne Krentz and the book is The Golden Chance. I have been using the Calibre Obok DeDRM because many of the books from Kobo are Kobo Plus books that I am able to get for free because I subscribe to something called Kobo Plus Read. I can get many books that way, but they are not "downloadable", meaning there is no download link on them. I use the Kobo for PC and sync the book. There is a file that downloads to a folder on my pc that I have been able to decrypt and convert to an epub using Calibre with the Obok DeDRM plugin. As I said, recently that has stopped working, and I get the error message that I uploaded earlier.

I am still able to download the free books to Adobe Digital editions, but I have never been able to do that with the ones that you have to pay for and I get with my subscription. I will look into upgrading my Calibre again. I did it recently, but maybe there's a newer version and I'll look into that. If there is a different plug-in I should be using, I'd sure appreciate hearing what that would be.

At this time, if you look at the OBOK display, you will see that books that have DRM are showing as not having DRM when looking at the books in the KDA app. The import still works on books synced to a Kobo ereader.

If you want to edit the eBook, ePub is easier to edit. Plus you don't have to strip the KePub code. Also, if you have the ePub, the conversion to KePub is done on the fly behind the scenes. So IMHO, it's a win-win to have the source format be ePub.

I would have to disagree. I personally find editing a kepub to take no more effort than editing an ePub. Since stripping the kepub code is done by several tools which I already use for other purposes, it takes no extra effort on my part for those occasions where I want to strip the kepub bits and bobs.

I grabbed that book and it was already a calibre conversion which was then run through Kobo's pipeline to add the various spans, etc. that are involved in creating a kepub. I did run it through a full calibre epub to epub conversion but didn't see any errors. The only possibility I could see is if this was a downloaded sample file. What I am not sure of is why you are doing the full calibre conversion? If you want to get rid of the kepub bits and bobs, you can use the ModifyePub plugin with the Strip Kobo DRM Remnants option ticked. Faster and less intrusive.

The second issue is that you downloaded the KePub version when you should have downloaded the ePub version. On the Kobo website, select My Account and then Books. Find the cover of the book you want. Then select the three dots and then download. If the eBook has DRM you will get the ACSM file to use with the DeACSM plugin or Adobe Digital Editions. If the book has no DRM, you will download the ePub.

DNSB, yes, the author is Jayne Krentz and the book is The Golden Chance. I have been using the Calibre Obok DeDRM because many of the books from Kobo are Kobo Plus books that I am able to get for free because I subscribe to something called Kobo Plus Read. I can get many books that way, but they are not "downloadable", meaning there is no download link on them. I use the Kobo for PC and sync the book. There is a file that downloads to a folder on my pc that I have been able to decrypt and convert to an epub using Calibre with the Obok DeDRM plugin. As I said, recently that has stopped working, and I get the error message that I uploaded earlier. I am still able to download the free books to Adobe Digital editions, but I have never been able to do that with the ones that you have to pay for and I get with my subscription. I will look into upgrading my Calibre again. I did it recently, but maybe there's a newer version and I'll look into that. If there is a different plug-in I should be using, I'd sure appreciate hearing what that would be. I really appreciate the time you both put into your replies. Thanks so much.
