32-bit Linux and Patches

Does anyone use a 32-bit Linux and patch your Kobo's firmware? The reason I ask is because there is some diffculty building a new 32-bit Linux patcher. The question is, do we need to try to make a 32-bit version or can we do away with it?

Please only answer the poll if you use Linux for patching your Kobo. Thanks.

I don't think there is any up-to-date browser on 32 bit Linux.
No updated Calibre or QT.

Unlike Windows, no extra RAM or SSD/HDD is needed to go to 64bits. A 1G RAM works. HW that is 32 bit only is very old now.

Last Supported 32 bit Mint was 19.3. The 64 bit Mint is now 22.2

I think you’re underestimating the amount of people unwilling to update simply because they can. Just look at the number of posts from people still using ancient versions of Calibre.

And the number of people using Windows 7 when they should be using Windows 10.

I'm not underestimating. I'm just explaining there is poor support generally for 32 bit and actually I think it's a shame.

Maybe they have 32 bit cpus? There is no 32 bit Windows 10 now, and that was really only for 64 bit Atoms that can't sanely run 64 bit windows due to built in RAM limits. The 64 bit Linux is fine on those but the installer needs a patched 32bit UEFI. That's beyond most.

Most people don't want to change from Windows to Linux. Most XP users never wanted to upgrade and most Windows 7 users didn't want to upgrade. Win11 barely has a Windows majority.

There is no "should be using Windows 10" unless you are in a business that needs Win10 only, but now Win10 is out of support, so it's now Win11 (which has spurious HW needs) or buy a Mac or migrate to Linux or BSD etc.

So there is now no "should be using Windows 10" for anyone.

If you're in the EU, you can pay MS for the extended Windows 10 support, but I agree, you should switch to *NIX instead. There isn't any world where I would suggest switching to Mac just because you cannot run Windows 11. If you're so invested in Windows that you'd consider buying a new PC, you're not talking about a person who would be willing to subject themself to a different keyboard layout

If you are in the EU, you don't have to pay. But you do have to register.

"paying" by loss of privacy. We simply won't connect the W10 stuff to Internet. I'm not signing up to MS. None of the Win10 stuff uses MS accounts. All local accounts.

One other thing you will need. You will need to be using a Microsoft account on Windows 10 and not a local account.

I only have one Windows PC left which is my gaming PC and that already runs Win11 with a MS account. For now. Because of kernel-level anti-cheat that Linux cannot support.

Switched to linux around 15 years ago, using 64bit versions only. 32bit packages are getting phased out, people can do just fine without installing anything from the multilib repos. Probably steam is the only program left with 32bit dependencies.

The poll is missing some options.

I seldom use Linux, I don't know if it is 32/64 bit, and I don't patch.

The poll is for those using Linux who also patch Kobo firmware. So if you do not fit in that category, the poll is not for you.
