Passes over is an acceptable common expression in the British Isles, and used in Irish for over 1500 years.

Ireland I can't say about but I've lived in all four corners of Great Britain and have never heard passes over, passed on and passed away yes, passes over is a new one, doesn't sound right tbh.

For what it may be worth, I have heard the term passing and passed over for death. It does sound better that saying s/he croaked and more formal that s/he kicked the bucket. Personally, I suspect the deceased are totally disinterested in how we refer to their demise.

I always cringe at "popped his clogs", so I welcome any of the "passes ___" instead.

Goodness gracious, this is a peculiar forum. Why are people fixating on the choice of a phrase? RIP Greg Newby. Gutenberg was very important to me when I first started reading ebooks. I had no idea that the project started in 1971.

Getting back on topic, a shame the world has lost someone passionate about bringing reading to everyone.

I was surprised to read in the link he was involved in the (ethical) hacking community! Not something I would have thought.

A quick search came up with this link: Witness History: The ‘father of e-books’.

Very grateful to this man and the community he built up. Have read many interesting books and pamphlets from the site he created, and even did some proofreading for them myself. Rest in peace, and may someone as passionate as he was take over the reins.
