Well, that's interesting.
I have got the serial number and rung Amazon, it's not blacklisted but it is still registered to another account. Now it gets interesting because he said that I will have to factory reset it to use it, and once it's factory reset because it's 2012 I will not be able to register it as my device and told me to buy a newer one starting with serial "G" I don't know if that's true or they are just trying to get me to buy a new Kindle. |

Yes, you can still register a Kindle Touch. It can be a bit tricky. They will send a OTP code by email or text which you add to the end of your password when signing in on the Kindle. Although some people menton using the code instead of their regular password.

He said I wouldn’t be able to register it without a software update and I can’t do that until I register it, so catch 22 really. But Amazon website gives download links, very strange. |

You'll just want to find instructions for "manually update Kindle software" and the Amazon page for your version of Kindle, then work through each of the versions (they are not cumulative) until it is fully up to date. |

Or simply ask the vendor before completing the purchase. I have helped several people pick up older Kindles from 3 different vendors who responded that the devices they were selling were not blacklisted and, so far, that response has been correct.

The vendors I have asked have shipped non-blacklisted units. I suspect that eBay would frown on the vendor if they shipped a blacklisted unit after saying it was not blacklisted. If you don't ask, you are taking your chances.

When I registered my Kindle Touch, I used the OTP as my password to register it.

I just checked and Amazon has the directions on how to do multiple firmware updates if needed and the links to each firmware you'll need. So there isn't going to be a problem.

Just for information's sake, I just bought a Kindle Touch (4th Generation) on eBay and I was able to register it. The one I bought was listed as "Ebay Refurbished". It was maybe a few dollars more than some of the others I saw, but I figured that might be a good bet against getting a blacklisted kindle. I did think I would have to manually update the firmware, but to my surprise when I got it, it was already updated to the latest firmware for the Kindle Touch. So I didn't have to mess with that. It did take me a couple of tries to register it, because the first time, Amazon didn't send the email with the one time password to my email. I tried again and they sent it. Then I just entered the one time password they sent instead of my real password in the Kindle and voilà, it was registered to me. I can access the store (although it's so slow I'll stick to just buying my books on the website) and download all my past purchases.

One of the refurbished Kindles that I helped an acquaintance to purchase had the battery replaced with a note that the new battery was manufactured a few years back. It did cost more than some of the other Kindle PW 5th gen (AKA PW1) that were listed but the purchaser felt it was worth it.
