I sideloaded a book on my kindle PW through send-to-kindle method. All went fine till one month. I read the book on my android kindle app on my phone as well as on my PW.
All of a sudden out of nowhere, the book became kind of unavailable on my PW device. When I click on the book in the library, it says 1% downloading, then I click on it and then the process starts again. I can read it fine on my Android phone in Kindle app. When my kindle is in airplane, mode, it asks me to turn on the wi-fi to download the book. But the book never gets downloaded. In the manage content page in my Amazon account, the books shows up being in 2 content devices i.e. my phone and my paperwhite device. I tried restarting my device but the problem still remained. Then I hard pressed the power button and did a force restart. When the device restarted, I connected to wi-fi and the book opened. Then after I turned on the airplane mode, the situation returned to square one where the book doesn't open and I always see "queued" and "1% downloading" My Kindle PW is up-to-date. What should I do so that I can read the book in my PW device now? I wish I could remove it from my device and re-sync it without losing my highlights but that option can't be found in my Amazon UI in browser, neither my Kindle device. |

And the book was already delivered to my device long time ago as I mentioned. How does AWS outage on 20th October affect this and what should I do to fix this problem? |

Delete the book from your Kindle then go to tour content library at Amazon and resend it to your kindle.

I would Restart the Kindle and try downloading it again. This has resolved similar issues for me.

Been some months since this issue occurred.
I gave up and deleted the book entirely from my Kindle collection and loaded it again via Amazon send-to-kindle web service. Things went fine for some months. Now the issue has occurred with the exact same book. What steps to take to overcome this now? |

To be honest, this is a weird one.
You were able to send it to your PW device and it was available to read for a month and then disappeared. You then did a few things to get it back, and eventually succeeded once, but then it disappeared again and you've had no luck since. It also appears that Amazon software simultaneously think you have the ebook on your device and you don't. Clearly, unless you are having this issue with other ebooks, there is something wrong with that particular ebook. Something forces the ebook to disappear from your device or appear to, backed up by the 1% state while it attempts to download again. Here's a couple of things to check. 1. How full is the PW device? Very full devices can misbehave sometimes. 2. Seeing as you side-loaded it, it is DRM-Free. So you should be able to use calibre (etc) to convert it to another file type supported by Amazon. Actually, if you used the Send To Kindle option, you didn't really side-load it. So you could try to do that by connecting your device to a PC, and either use calibre to copy it to your device or manually do it yourself using your device as a drive. Your device should accept, AZW and AZW3 and MOBI file formats, so try each of those. If that fails, you could try PDF too. Did you send it to your Amazon account as an EPUB file? |

I always transfer ebooks to my Kindle via send-to-kindle service so that my bookmarks and highlights always stay synced, backed up and can be easily exported. I use epub format for that transfer. And this method has worked well for over 600 books on my device.
My storage of PW is quite free. 1.65 GB used and 25.66 GB is free. ![]() Isn't there any way to diagnose this by exporting some sort of a log file that contains errors? Last edited by archz2; 07-12-2026 at 09:30 AM. Reason: Oversize image changed to link. Please read the guidelines on image size. |

It sounds like Amazon is treating this particular book halfway like a library loan. I can't say I know how Amazon treats an expired library loan, since I watch my loans closely and return them manually as they near expiration (or re-new them). I've never experienced what happens when you leave an expired loan in place and Amazon takes over.
While what you're describing may not be the scenario that unfolds for an expired library loan happens, I can see parts of it as being potentially like what might happen. Especially since it's apparently affecting only one book. I wonder if Amazon has somehow gotten it's wires crossed on this book and it thinking it's half owned, half loaned. |

As I said, I am speculating since I have never experienced what Amazon does when a library loan has expired and you attempt retain the book on your Kindle. But specific comments that triggered me to think some of this sounds like activity I might expect for library loans include:
"All went fine till one month" (one month seems a reasonable time frame for a 21 day library loan) "All of a sudden out of nowhere, the book became kind of unavailable on my PW device" (as if an expired library book had been automatically removed) "If I delete the book from my kindle device, it will get deleted from my Amazon kindle library also" (you wouldn't expect a library loan to continue existing on your Amazon account) "Now the issue has occurred with the exact same book" (appears to be an issue that is affecting only one book, that could have gotten screwed up with crossed wires between purchase and loan) |
