I've not read any Pynchon. Is there a book by him you'd recommend I start with?

According to my LibraryThing catalog, I have four Thomas Pynchon books, of which I've read none of them. I always think I'm going to start one, then I either see the estimated length or the density of the prose of the first chapter, and decide I'm not in the right headspace for it.

He's one of those authors I think I probably should like. And I gave Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day a real try, but got stuck somewhere in the middle in both cases.

Conceptually, he's interesting, but on the micro-level of sentence to sentence, I find reading him a struggle.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but comparing him to an author like David Foster Wallace who is also supposed to be "difficult", I enjoy the flow of language and the way with words much more in DFW.

But I will might give it a shot eventually.

Yes: The Crying of Lot 49. It's a thin novel, and it's very accessible.

If you enjoy reading challenging novels, then I would suggest you tackle his first novel: V
