I've not read any Pynchon. Is there a book by him you'd recommend I start with?

According to my LibraryThing catalog, I have four Thomas Pynchon books, of which I've read none of them. I always think I'm going to start one, then I either see the estimated length or the density of the prose of the first chapter, and decide I'm not in the right headspace for it.

Never heard of the guy. So I went and read the synopsis - nope, not interested.

He's one of those authors I think I probably should like. And I gave Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day a real try, but got stuck somewhere in the middle in both cases.
Conceptually, he's interesting, but on the micro-level of sentence to sentence, I find reading him a struggle. I can't quite put my finger on it, but comparing him to an author like David Foster Wallace who is also supposed to be "difficult", I enjoy the flow of language and the way with words much more in DFW. But I will might give it a shot eventually. Last edited by xor_; Yesterday at 01:01 PM. |
