I wrote to a couple of Kindle only authors to let them know I would not be buying any of their books because of Amazons policies. I’m sure they didn’t care. I have been able to find other authors that I like. I just cannot allow Amazon to have complete control of my books.

One did eventually email me back that he was pulling his books from KDP Select for a Kickstarter reward. I was able to get the rest of the series as well as the new book. So it never hurts to ask.

Does this also affect older kindle devices that get KFX but are no longer updated (like Paperwhite 3) or is it only still updated devices? or am I misunderstanding the impact of this new version of KFX being mentioned?

The only Kindles for which DeDRM cannot be used now are the ones which received firmware 5.18.5: 11th and 12th gen, Colorsoft and Scribe. 10th gen (for example Oasis 3) and earlier still work.

My Oasis 3 has software version 5.18.2 but I still cannot pull a KFX off of it. I get KFX-ZIP.

Is the serial number in the deDRM settings? What is your deDRM version?

Thank you for that reminder. I thought for sure the Oasis SN was in there, but it was not. I am using DeDRM 10.0.9

I was able to get the one book that I had not been able to.

try using the autorelease of the dedrm plugin (another repository by the same github user), it may make a difference as well

You have to now connect to calibre and import the books after adding kindle serial.

Basically plug in your kindle, pull up calibre, go to 'device' at the top which will show you a list of your books on the device.

Then select your books (can control click multiple) then right click to 'add to library' and then it will send them over directly as KFX files.

My wife's kindle is running 5.18.1. I've use the above method to download the book to calibre as well as just finding the book off of the kindle by browsing directories. While I do get a KFX, I get the error that it has DRM even though I'm running DeDRM 10.0.9 and have triple checked that I have the correct serial number configured.

This worked well with download and transfer, but any book that I can't download to kindle for the PC does not allow me to remove it even when I grab it off of this kindle.

Now that I've posted this, I tried with the above directions again (I probably updated DeDRM since my last attempt) and it looks like it worked better (no error about DRM), but I'm now trying to figure out how to convert to EPUB.

Select the book in Calibre, tap the "Convert Books" button on the ribbon. Select "EPUB" as output format. (The input format should already be set). Tap oK and wait until the job is done.
