Calibre 8.11.1 Zip to ePub creating blank book

I updated to Calibre 8.11.1

I added a file saved from Word as "Web Page, Filtered" which appears in Calibre as a compressed (Zip) folder.

When I convert to ePub I get the cover and a blank book. (The book shows as 2 pages but nothing appears but a blank page).

I uninstalled Calibre and reinstalled 8.7 and the conversion works fine. The epub created shows the actual content not just a blank page.

I am on Windows 11.

Unsure what other information you need, but I have tried 8.11.1 twice now with the same results. I tried with several different HTML/zip files I had successfully converted in the past. All came out as 2 page blank books with only the cover.

Curious - if you're using Word 2007 or later, why "Web Page, Filtered" and not DOCX?

Yes, that works well (or LO Writer) if Styles & headings are used and a ToC added. Avoid columns and tables (though some tables will work). Footnotes need special treatment, but all of that is true for HTML export.

Word HTML export used to be dreadful compared to import doc or docx to a real HTML editor.

I find even actual web pages (which can be saved and imported to Calibre) are far better copy/pasted to Word/LO Writer and "cleaned up", then a docx for Calibre.

It's Microsoft Office 2024.

I have always used Web Page, Filtered even when I had older versions of Word as that is what the forum instructions at the time said to use. This is the first time it has failed. I have been using Calibre since 2009.

My impression at the time I started doing this was that Web Page, Filtered was the simplest HTML Word produced and got rid of unneeded formatting. But I may be be misremembering the reason.

I tested it on multiple HTML (webpage filtered) files to epub and all came out normal.

So no further action is needed.

I really appreciate your help!

Thanks.

I used to do the same, save a copy to Filtered HTML and convert that to EPUB. As I recall the alternatives, RTF and the third party DOC Input plugin, were both problematic.

When Kovid implemented support for DOCX I switched to it almost immediately because it eliminated the intermediate format.

I see your issue has been fixed in 8.12, but assuming you also keep the DOCX, try converting it to EPUB.
