Not that you are missing out on anything...
In the past 10 years nothing significant happened in the kobo firmware at least from the user side. Maybe the fast page turning (how many of you're using that?), dark mode, and now instapaper. But the reader program itself hasn't received any feature improvements in a decade. Kobo’s dark mode is a low effort feature anyway. It sets the book’s text to dark, but the menus stay white, which feels like a quasar beaming into my face if I’m not careful in the middle of the night. |

By the reader program, are you referring to the RMSDK renderer used for ePub files (basically an ePub2 renderer that handles Adobe's ADEPT DRM) or the ACCESS/WebKit/Readium based renderer used for kepub with excellent support for ePub3 features? The RMSDK renderer has not moved to the later versions (ADE 4 equivalent) which would have better ePub3 features. Using their own renderer allows Kobo to use their own encryption and avoid the cost for books sent with ADEPT encryption.

Folks should be thankful that Kobo moved on from their initial reading solution that stored books as blobs in the database (this was in the days of the Kobo Bluetooth).

Koreader is free and open source, while to use Nickel you (probably) have to pay for it in some way, as you can only use it on kobo hardware. I use Nickel, and I like it, but why we still can't have a clock on the reader by default? They could just add a toggle for it. There were reading awards, which broke like around 2018, then disappeared from the firmware a couple of years ago. (This one is not a big deal though, but was cute and may motivated people to read more.) So small things like that could've been improved, but they haven't. We have almost more toggles in user patches than actual settings on a kobo reader. Of course it is still better than amazon who only cares about DRM. |

Well I don't really feel a huge speed improvement between my Aura and Libra 2, but what I actually do is probably because of the newer screen tech, and not because of the kobo part. Yeah I know, the new kobo line of products are actually faster with the different chipset, but those are not for me. I'm holding to my Libra as it was some kind of rare magical treasure on a big deserted island.

Comparison with KOReader is not really valid. KOReader is not a commercial product, it is developed by enthusiasts. Kobo and other ereader sellers have to pay their developers in addition to all their other costs. Would I like their software to have more features? Of course, who wouldn't. Is it likely to happen? Nope. |

The main advantage of KOReader is if the epub is a bit "broken". It's only a file browser interface with a clunky search of a Calibre Metadata file.
Most ereader renderers even on 10 year old ereaders or apps do everything needed. The big advantage of Kobo with the native one is metadata based listings. In the last 10 years maybe they added subtitle and series as well as the previous "collections/shelves". I have a Sony PRS-350 and an ancient Binatone. For actual reading of an epub2 they do everything needed. The Kindle K3 with azw3 likewise. Similarly to just play DVDs, there is no new player that has a better UI than my 2004 model. I have a 1990s CD player and it needs nothing new. Peak eink ereader was about 2014, 11 years ago. There hasn't been much needed since then. In fact the Kindle UI has gone backwards. I've had KO Reader on Kobo, but took it off when Kobo added per document "clipping/zoom" on PDFs. I still have it on an eink Android, but don't use that. I found no need for it on my phone or tablets (I've Pocketbook, Lithium, Aldiko/Cantook etc). I fix Gutenberg texts with a conversion filter when I add them. I convert all added ebooks to remove line-height and white-space. There might be some value with poorly formatted ebooks and KOReader for people with no PC. |

A clock is only a tap away on Kobo, and I can't imagine why I'd want one on the page all the time on any platform with any app.

Because sometimes minutes count. I do like to have it in the apps on my phone, and on my laptop. I don't need it on my ereaders, because I almost never read in a hurry, but many people do.
