That's quite interesting. I suppose it's a relatively new security measure, as I think I've read reports of people in the past changing the clock to keep library books beyond their due dates. I guess Kobo eventually got wise to that.

So all these reports by people here, saying they can change their time and dates, must be from people using old software?

No. They're from people who aren't logged in to Kobo Plus or Overdrive.

But they were all saying I should not log out, because that causes a database reset? How do you setup a Kobo without ending up logged into your Kobo account? I might like to do that.

A Kobo account is not the same as an Overdrive account or a Kobo Plus subscription.

Do you borrow ebooks from a library or have in the past? Do you have a Kobo Plus subscription?

No, at least not since everything being reset from scratch. The ereader does not even have an Adobe registration currently, and I have never been a member of Kobo plus. I have only ever bought books direct from Kobo, or downloaded from a local library using Adobe Digital Editions and loaded them using that software. I have sideloaded an occasional free e-book, or ones I have purchased from other sources without DR management.

So maybe that blows this new theory.

+1

My Clara 2E says "Not authorized with Adobe Digital Editions" and I've never subscribed to Kobo Plus.

Authorization with ADE is also different from registration with Overdrive on the device. Have you borrowed library books directly on your Clara, without ADE transfer?

Even if you cannot change the time, you can change the timezone. So what's the problem with that?

Try installing 4.38.23171. That's the firmware I am using and I can change the time. I am not logged into Kobo Plus or Overdrive. I never have been.

Create a new account on the Kobo. It doesn't need a real email or domain. It's only ever used if you log into the Kobo website with the same account.

It does not give me that option. During setup it insists on talking to the Kobo desktop software, which automatically sets it up with my Kobo account. Now that I think of it, I do want to be able to buy books from Kobo anyway, so...
