So why not change the timezone (to match the timezone your time is set to) if it really matters that much? Logging out is going to cause one heck of a mess. Don't do it. Don't ever do it unless you are doing so to fix a corrupt database.

Actually, you don't need to change the time on a cruise ship because eventually you will be back home where the time will then be correct. It's only like two weeks at most where the time won't be correct.

I did notice that at times, the ship would jump from the current time zone to the next destination time zone when we left port. Probably easier for them than changing the clocks 3 times.

Nope. On a world cruise, they do indeed change it three times, so the passengers don't suffer a big jump. Happened many times where we had multiple jumps to get to the timezone for the next port - they are not always adjacent zones.

I hear what you are saying, but is it really too much to expect to be able to change the time on any computer device?

No,, I'm *very* curious what is causing this difference people are seeing with some able to change time and others not. (The message that time will be set automatically is irrelevant. I have that as well, it doesn't stop me from adjusting time.)

Just to get the obvious out of the way, have the people unable to adjust time tried turning it off and on again? (not just sleep mode, but hold the power button a few seconds so it goes into power off mode.)

OK, I tried that just now. No difference, still can't set time or date.

Software version is at 4.38.23429 btw.

Would an actual factory reset achieve anything that logging out and re-setting up the kobo (like I have done twice) wouldn't?

Not for your issue with not being able to set date/time directly. If you SSH or telnet to your Kobo, you can use the date command to set the time/date but that will gradually revert when connected to WiFi.

Wow, this needs an award for the most geeky way to change the time in an ereader. Actually I have never bothered to check if Kobo used linux or whatever. Didn't realise Kobo left ports open like that. In a way, it's a bad thing to do that. I am surprised that at least a paswword is not required (or is it common knowledge what user accounts are exposed)?

I don't get any messages about automatic changing. I touch the relevant place and just get the option to change it manually.

Is it related to having a Kobo Plus account, or having used the Kobo shop with same account as the Kobo? I use a different account for the Kobos and for the shop, which means I can only download on a Browser; WiFi Sync won't fetch ebooks.

Kobo Plus isn't available in my country, but I do use the same account for buying Kobo books.

Well, a Kindle also involves [1] Jail break it first. [2] Install USB networking.
Then you can set the time & date. Many Kindles NEVER had a way to set the date and used the cell/mobile or WiFi. Obviously most K1, K2, DX & DXG can't fetch the time now. OTOH all of those can be jailbroken.

The reMarkable also has open ports. Actually since the 1 & 2 don't have USB storage or MTP, the USB cable or WiFi can only use networking to read/write files. The password for root is given on the Licence page and it always seems to be IP address 10.11.99.1 and you can use a web browser to access it, but it's clunky. As I have no interest in a reMarkable account and so called Cloud services (=someone else's server) I use Filezilla to copy files on/off the reMarkable via USB networking. On Android I now use Total Commander with the SMB/Windows share plug-in (all free) over WiFi for far fast transfer than USB.

The ports are not left open by default and telnet requires a password from factory. SSH will have you set the password on the first connection. Older Kobo firmware used telnet, newer firmware uses SSH.
