Column for Weblink

I would like a plugin that creates a new column for which the type is a weblink. I source my ebooks from several sources and would like to be able to click a link in Calibre without having to resort to adding it in comments then needing to go into edit mode to find it.

Why do to need edit mode to find a link in comments?
A Link is (default colored) BLUE

AFAIK Search can find comments with HTTP
(I have none, so I have no test case)

That's fair. What I was thinking was to have a link column so I can scroll through the database and click a link in a column.

The behaviour of clicking cells in the booklist is controlled by the Preferences>Tweak: doubleclick_on_library_view, the description of which is:

You can control the behavior of double clicks and pressing Enter on the books list. Choices:
  • open_viewer,
  • do_nothing,
  • show_book_details,
  • show_locked_book_details,
  • edit_cell,
  • edit_metadata.
Selecting anything other than open_viewer, show_book_details, or show_locked_book_details has the side effect of disabling editing a field using a single click.

Default: open_viewer.

Example: doubleclick_on_library_view = 'do_nothing'

This may be of interest: Templates and URLs

However it states:

Quote:
When an item with a search template is clicked in Book details the template is evaluated…
No mention of clicking the cell in the Book list.

@BetterRed

The OP mentions "Database". I can't help but think s/he wants to click on a cell in the Database. Scrolling through a database seems a bit weird, though.

Unless by database s/he means Library? Not really the same thing in my books.

Does s/he even need a separate column in the library. Can't he just use the ID's with a hyperlink?

@Karellen - AFAIK, you cannot click on a composite column that presents an ID in the book list, it can only be clicked in book details.

I did try having my own book specific IDa, but maintaining it was too restrictive and too hard, that's why I have a Links long text column.

I can edit it in the book list via F2, don't have to fish for it in MDE, I can have multiple URLs in the one cell, which can be non http* URLs (e.g. calibre://, onenote://, file//:, mailto:// etc). To 'click' on a link I press enter in the book list, which pops the locked book detail panel, then I tab to the item I want in Links (it's the 2nd item in my locked BD panel) and press Enter.

Pretty sure I've seen requests for Clickable links in the book list a number of times over the past 10-15 years, the answer's always been 'No can do', with an explanation I can't remember.

One way to do what the OP seems to want is to use a custom tooltip, assigning a shortcut to the "Show item tooltip in a dialog" command.

Example:
  • Create a "long text" custom column.

Name:	Clipboard01.jpg
Views:	9
Size:	47.7 KB
ID:	218302
  • Set it to show plain text.
  • Define a custom tooltip for the column. The template is this:
    Code:
    program:
    	f_string('<a href="{globals(original_text)}">link to {globals(original_text)}</a>')

To use it,
  • Edit a cell in the column either on the book list or in edit metadata, putting the desired link in the column. In this example I'm using a link to baen.com. It will look something like this:

Name:	Clipboard04.jpg
Views:	8
Size:	6.2 KB
ID:	218304
  • Click on the cell.
  • Use the shortcut you defined to open the tooltip dialog. You will see something like this:

Name:	Clipboard03.jpg
Views:	8
Size:	11.2 KB
ID:	218303
  • Click the link.
If you want to be able to use the link in book details then use a standard long text column containing HTML. Put the link in that. Have the tooltip display the HTML from the column without change because it will already be a URL. Using this technique you can put multiple URLs in the cell. Each will be clickable in the tooltip dialog.
