Yes, it happens on every device. But not at the same rate or amount.

Maybe, but there have been posters here who say they never see it, even when they have set the full refresh to never. And then there are posters (myself included) who always see it, on every eink device they use, unless the full refresh has been set to every page.

Is one of the two groups hallucinating? If so, which?

How then to maximise contrast for ease of reading?
What else, besides refresh rate, can be changed?

Baffling.

But almost everyone in our wider family has an eink ereader. There were 6 Sage (one got lost), 2 x original H2O, Nook ST (now dead), Kobo Touch C (now dead), Nia, Elipsa, reMarkable, Various Kindle Basics, PW1, PW2. PW3 (a few), PW4, K3, DXG, a Kindle with no touch or keyboard, Kindle Oasis 2, Storybook Cover (iRiver?, now dead), Likebook Mars, Libra H2O, Libra 2, Sony PRS-350, T1 (sent back) and Sony PRS-T2.

I see no variation on the Sages. The PW3s are similar, Pw4 worse than PW3s or original H2O.

I've seen Boox Color and 3 models of Pocketbook, inc one colour. Saw a Sony in early 2007.

Generally they have to be side by side to see differences. The worst screen was the Kobo Touch (C version). Poorer than old Pearl on K3. It had bad ghosting.

Sometimes the Sage has bad ghost on wake till the next page is pressed.

Full colour or grey scale images on a page force a full refresh, but simple two tone pure black and white images don't.

All the Carta screens need less refreshes if doing pure black & White. Anything with a coloured or grey background is dreadful on eink.

I'd now only buy a new different model eink if:
1. My Sage dies
AND
2. There is a better 8″ Kobo.

Kobo works best with Calibre and with "SideloadMode=true" has the best UI / metadata interface. KOReader is the worst as it has file browser or clunky search Calibre metadata file.

In regard to ghosting, yes. In regard to decreasing contrast, no. That still happens on Carta screens just like it happened on Pearl screens.

But as I said, most people seem not to notice.

You can install other fonts, if the built-in fonts are not what you'd prefer.

Kobo + KOReader user here.

To me the most annoying part of the eink is the ghosting as described above. I value seamless page turns so most often my full page refresh is either turned off or set to a large number. Either way, full page refresh is a necessary evil that you need every once in a while.

And honestly, it’s not that bad when it’s in light mode, as others said there are forced full refreshes on wake up and sleep, etc., which is cleaning it up enough for me. but when it’s night time, and I turn on dark mode, the ghosting becomes really unpleasant. At the same time, you do not want that bright flash on your eyes in the middle of the night frequently. Thankfully KOReader has a neat setting to set the full refresh intervals for dark and light mode separately. So I usually either turn if completely off and do manual refresh or use a setting like 99 light and 30 dark.

In order to be able to turn it off, you need to tweak the book a little bit. If the book has inconsistent line spacing (meaning that the lines page after page will not lineup on top of each other for one reason or another) then ghosting will be very noticeable. At this point, you want to tweak CSS or in someway prevent the inconsistent items from messing up the line spacing. These inconsistencies can occur due to large headers, images, chapter markers. Anything that’s not abiding by the line height-based spacing is going to mess it up.

In addition, contrast and some other very valuably customization options are available in KOReader. You can definitely work around the experience managing a file system with a few UI tweaks (I do).

"Valuable" is relative. I've tried KOReader and found nothing particularly valuable for me that I wanted and couldn't get with patching in the native reader. But then I edit my ebooks and eliminate many annoyances before I even load the books to my Kobos.

YMMV, of course.
