Calibre 8.10 Book Viewer not displaying text
Hi all,
The Calibre 8.10 Book Viewer is not displaying text properly. This is an issue with every book in the Library (all epubs). Instead I just see a wall of question marks each within a square. I have attached a screenshot. These books will display correctly in the Books.app using "Open with." I am on MacOS Sequoia 15.7 using a M2 Mac Mini. The Calibre library is stored on an external hard drive. Other files on that hard drive open properly in their respective applications. I have restarted the computer and reinstalled Calibre to no avail. Any ideas what the issue might be? Thanks Last edited by institute; 09-21-2025 at 09:18 AM. |

I suspect the viewer has had a Font set to something that does not support your books character set.
With the viewer CLOSED (off) In the configuration folder: Rename viewer-webengine.json to viewer-webengine.json.bak When you next start the viewer, it will be recreated (with default settings). If this works, make your other setting changes as desired and delete the previous BAK file. If it does not help and you had customizations you wanted to keep, delete the NEW version, then rename the .BAK (by removing the .BAK part) file to the original |

It's likely a bad font in the system, see for example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2125179

Yes. That was it. I had been using Garamond for ages but apparently that font file is suddenly corrupt according to Font Book. I changed the font in the viewer preferences and it works again. Thanks!

BTW, that same bug hit me but the problem was not a bad font, but a duplicate font which seems to confuse Qt. It turns out I had a local Arial font file and a local Times New Roman font file but Sequoia installed a system version of Arial and of Times New Roman with lots of unicode code points added to each of their versions.
With Apple's FontBook I was able to detect the duplicates and remove/disable my own local copies of Arial and Times New Roman and everything Qt started to work again. So look out for font duplicates as well. If in doubt, disable your local font files. |
