Amazon fall hardware event
Amazon has sent out invitations to news organizations for a hardware event on September 30 .
The associated image appears to include a color Kindle and based on the small size of the text on its screen it seems to have a larger screen size than the current Colorsoft models. My guess is that it will be a new Scribe. I have seen code in recent Kindle firmware for drawing in color that backs this up. |

The text says “everywhere… with a stroke… of a pen”…

Top right looks like Amazon Echo, I hope it is not getting integrated into the Kindle…

An 8" Scribe would be interesting, but I think I'd still opt for 10" (assuming that is an option). I have done handwriting on my iPad mini but have to write proportionally smaller and it feels a little cramped. Presumably the templates would have to scale down 20% so that you could go between 8 and 10 inch devices without weirdness. And for fixed layout content bigger is always better. I didn't like the asymmetric design of Oasis, the buttons did not match up with my hands, and it was anti ergonomic for me. I'm not anti-button, but my 8" color PocketBook has them on the bottom where I can operate with either hand without flipping it over, or ignore them and just tap and swipe. Too bad the ColorSoft and 2024 Paperwhite weren't 8", I think that is about perfect page size for most reading. Mostly the things I'm wishing for are software / platform enhancements, e.g. being able to view handwritten notes (active canvas in addition to sticky notes) on other Kindles and Kindle apps or for print replica documents. Why not have underline highlight style available everywhere too? And work with publishers to enable Scribe support for fixed layout textbooks. Support 2 page view for print replica. |

I might be up for an 8 inch scribe. There is nothing else out there that looks like a viable replacement for my Oasis 3. The Scribe has no buttons, but at least it has a "handle" of sorts. I don't do well with tiny bezels.

The Kindle Scribe has a 10.2-inch screen. I'd be up for an 8-inch screen - a smaller Scribe, as you also wish for - but I would like buttons on mine. Oh, and NO color, for God's sake!!!! Last edited by Dr. Drib; 09-16-2025 at 08:19 PM. |

I'm not referring to the e-ink refresh, but the processing speed. Just seems sluggish. |

I feel like buttons are a pipedream now. Didn't the Amazon powers actually say that there would be no buttons ever again? And yes, no color. For me, not because of contrast concerns, but because I want my e-reader to be as unlike a phone or tablet as possible.

For me it's not a replacement for my beloved Oasis 3. I do like the Oasis shape and buttons, of course, which is one thing. The scribe seems to have a similar screen by the pictures but the feel of the back and model is closer to paperwhite than oasis since not metal. I also would have to have waterproof, which their current Scribe doesn't have. I also don't like huge devices for reading and no interest in the pen. It's a cool device for people whose needs it fits, but to me definitely not an oasis replacement, even if the only change they did was shrink it a bit.

Unfortunately the new bossman in charge of the line since last year doesn't seem to like buttons and did state this, yes.

Buttons are obsolete and need to go forever except the power button.

Other players like Rakuten Kobo, Onyx BOOX, and Bigme continue to release Oasis-like devices that have page turn buttons. The BOOX Go 7 Series is popular as an alternative to the Kindle Oasis. |
