I never listen to audio books, only radio theatre (or whatever we call it).
How bad is virtual voicing? Is it that it doesn't understand the sentence and it comes off-kilter? Or that it barfs on names or uncommon words? |

It's good enough to tide me over with a Kindle book when I want to keep going but have to be hands or eyes or both free, but "free" is the operative word. |

They sound much better than 40 years ago, but only good enough for free reading of text you bought or wrote. Some material works better than others and LLM only helps with known phrases. It has no understanding of context. It might get slightly better, but Google and Amazon are being deceptive marketing it to content providers and selling result to the public. None of it is significantly better than free local TTS.

In a nonfiction book which makes is so much worse Bret Harte is described as the "marquis contributor" to a newspaper.
Does no one at all pass their eyes over a book before it's published? |

Excuse my ignorance, but is that supposed to be 'marquee contributor'? I've never heard the phrase.

That's what it should be. I don't think it exists as a common phrase, but in using the word as an adjective (as opposed to referring to the lord) it's definitely marquee!

I see he made various contributions on magazines and journals (maybe I don't understand the phrase's reference). This, instead, is clearly super sad ![]() Quote:

I read Bret Harte's "Cressy" (1889), which I thought was quite good.
All his books are surely PD. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/593 |
