Unimportant question regarding conversion

I don't think that this is an important issue (though you might know better), but I'm curious.

Let's suppose that I obtain a book in KFX format. I convert it to KEPUB, so that I can load it onto my Kobo. A bit later, I decide that I want to convert it to EPUB for my Boox e-reader. When creating the EPUB, which of the two existing versions does Calibre work from? How does it decide which to use?

Currently, I would convert to ePub for the library copy and do an on the fly conversion to kepub to send it to my Kobos. Using this, your Boox would get the ePub without conversion. Saves from having two copies chewing up space.

If you already have kepub in your local library and want to convert to ePub for your local library, you can select Input format as KEPUB and output format as EPUB. This will result in both formats being stored.

Ah. I see. Thank you.

I'm not bothered about disc space getting used by multiple copies: I have plenty to spare.

(Doh! I've never noticed the Input format dropdown until you mentioned it and I looked for it. "Incompetent little man", as my no. 2 sister would call me if she knew.)

You may have plenty of disk space, but the excess KePub will make backups slower.

You're right, of course. But, again, it doesn't bother me.
