Yes, your whole hierarchy of reading development parallels my own, as we've discussed, but add ALL of Edgar Rice Burroughs and then Robert E. Howard's Lancer series from 1966 and on. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Don |

Don, I was just cutting up. Perhaps my favorite Cabell is the Coth section of the Silver Stallion. (I never was willing to pay for the Storiesende edition, myself, (I had a chance at US $750), and I like the Pape' illustrations, as well. I also like those of the post Manuel I have read, particularly the Urban Nightmare trilogy (Smirt, Smith, and Smire) and There Were Two Pirates (which I personally think is the best "primer" for sampling Cabell's style). I guess that's why i sometimes get in trouble around here. Like Coth at the world's end, "The others are wise, but I prefer the truth." RSE |

The the first two Scott Lynch books at least are self contained books and are just two books were some of the characters appear in booth books. So they are not books in a traditionally fantasy series.

If science fantasy is acceptable, then The Cyborg and the Sorcerers by Lawrence Watt-Evans would be my recommendation.
If you want something closer to Modern Fantasy, then On a Pale Horse, the first of the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. In terms of epic or heroic fantasy, I'm not sure I have one that is a particular favorite. |

I recommend "The Paladin of Souls" by Lois McMaster Bujold.
This is the second book of her "5 gods" series (only three are written). It shares the background of the first book "The Curse of Chalion". While some details are a bit clearer if you've read the first book, Paladin stands alone. Most fantasy that uses human protagonists (as apposed to Elves, or Hobbits, or such) tend to feature a young person, and are frequently a coming-of-age story. Paladin of Souls features a mature woman, who only starts this adventure because her daughter is now the queen - her duty is done and she's basically trying to escape. It's a welcome change to read about adults, once in a while. From Publishers Weekly: Quote:

I remember reading the reviews on Amazon in order to get a sense of reader reactions and saw reviews all over the place. Nevertheless, I'd read some Eddings and enjoyed what I read. So...I went and bought a cheap hardcover. Don |
