The image that DNSB kindly sent me is only 900 MB (400 MB compressed).
After mounting the µSD card on my computer and before creating the image, I copy all the files from the FAT32 partition to my computer, do a full format on the FAT32 partition and then copy the saved files back. The freshly formatted space compressed extremely well so the images became a lot smaller. This does add some time to the required time but the smaller size and cleaner image, it's worthwhile to me.

I started this procedure after one person who had received an image from me wrote a thank you for their Kobo working again. They also mentioned since they were taking a computer forensics course, they tried some of the course tools on the image I sent. They was quite surprised to find that the FAT32 partition had quite a few files that were recoverable—they were able to recover ~2GB worth of ebooks and personal information from the image. I then checked using an undelete utility and, yes, there was a lot of recoverable data which the full format removes.

For an image for your personal use, this procedure is not necessary but for an image that may be distributed, it's definitely a good idea.

Please note that there is a dedicated thread for firmware requests which is found at Kobo µSD Card Image Requests thread.

Requests posted outside that thread may not be noticed.

I managed to salvage my Kobo Libra 2 by using another Diks Image raw copy tool.. though the outcome was identical as the other tools I used (the FAT32 partition had no files to show), I copied the files from the FAT32 of my original image, to which I added the new FW update, inserted into the KL2 SD card slot and powered it up.. And Surprise! it did work! This was a new SD card 32GB I had formated with SD Formater, as the first pass of trying to write the image had failed after about 10% ..
Once the Libra 2 was up and running again (after not a long time) it presented with a Sync Error screen "Critical Error: Any reading progress, highlights or notes since your last sync on 08/27/2025 9:01PM will be lost" and a Sign Out button..
As I signed out, the device rebooted and prompted me with the classic screen for language selection.. Hooray!
At this point I just connected it to my PC and fired up Kobo Desktop, which promptly synced the content of my last books that I had downloaded, updated the whole device and presented it now with version 4.38.23429 !
I'm going to make a new Image file for the Rev. F of the Libra 2 and store that preciously.
Kobo CS had already confirmed that I was eligible for a refurbished replacement, but I didn't wanted to send my KL2 in before trying one last time.. and glad I did!
