I added that URL just to see if I could get any reports from any others who might want to open it.
As for the usefulness of Kobo's emails? That is up to the end user. As to the empty email sent to various users around the world? As near as I can tell from the 3 samples I've been sent, they are valid emails but with empty content suggesting an internal error at Kobo. If you open the URL for the email, it shows an empty page. Displaying the page source, shows nothing has been received. As for the quote below: If you opened the message @Sirtel linked, you would see it was a message from @bluepeter with an image of the empty email message from Kobo. I've had emails that use the real "from" and "Reply-To" addresses of a company, that mimic the regular emails perfectly, but the actual URL of the link isn't related to the company.
Those are realistic phishing attacks. The named company not attacked or compromised at all. Sure loads of email providers now prohibit "spoofing" a from email address (which had valid use; now they bounce that), but it's still possible for criminals. Sometimes it's companies I deal with. Sometimes it's a courier, but maybe at a time I didn't order. Other times it's simply well known companies. Sometimes they have one of my "real" names. They can get email addresses and names from PCs they have compromised. I always hover on a link to see the real URL. I've told my car insurance company I won't ever do their surveys till they host them as the 3rd party URL can't be verified. I now never click on "shortened" URLs. Unless Javascript is disabled and your browser is up to date (and has no zero day exploits) it's insane to click on 3rd party links in an email or wierd or "shortened service" links on a web page. |

It would be interesting to know what email providers people are using that have received this email. If it turns out that they are all using the big ones i.e. gmail, microsoft (do they still do emails?), Yahoo etc maybe it is just phishing. The reason I say this is the email provider I use is not well known and has robust privacy, anti spam, etc and I haven't received an email from Kobo UK (even though I have an account)

I have not gotten this email from Kobo. But I did get an email about Golden in Death being free. Given this email takes you the a page about this book, I think it's just a glitch.

But I'm inclined to believe that it's just a genuine glitch at Kobo. The e-mail addresses and web URL used all appear to be genuine Kobo ones. And when I clicked on the link, it took me to a Kobo web page that looked exactly the same as the empty e-mail. It didn't take me to a page about Golden in Death (or any other book), so my experience differs from others reported above. |

Moderators: why has my thread been moved into this thread?
I deliberately included the word "hacked" in the title of my thread. Please open my thread and include the first poster in this thread in that. Kobo being hacked is still a potential issue, and Kobo needs to identify one way or the other. I don't know who argued for the shutting down of my thread, but it's definitely not a polite thing to have done without making inquiries of me. The thread title speaks for itself. The ordinary person in the Street would likely have considered the email sent by a hacked kobo. Nothing to do with click bait, a sentiment i find abhorent to have been suggested. Why is the moderator protective of Kobo? Last edited by Lynx-lynx; Today at 12:24 AM. |

Moderator Notice
As the moderator who merged the two threads, the action will not be reversed. I did ask and was informed that the empty emails were not a result of Kobo being hacked. The two threads were about the same topic, hacking was no longer an potential issue and the Empty e-mail from Kobo thread being created first were the factors in deciding which way to merge. I admit that "Has kobo UK been hacked?" was likely better as click-bait compared to the rather boring "Empty e-mail received from Kobo" but since no hacking was involved, the click-bait had no reason for existing. Any further discussion must be taken to private messages. |
