Kindle+

Has anyone heard of "Kindle+"? I know of "Kindle Kids+", but this is something different.

I was examining the latest version of the Kindle for Android app and came across mention of it in multiple languages. Some examples are:
  • Kindle+ Membership
  • Your Kindle+ Titles
  • You have no Kindle+ titles. Tap on any book with a Kindle+ badge to start reading.

I wonder whether it could refer to an upcoming rebranding of "Kindle Kids+" or "Kindle Unlimited" or something new.

I've not come across it before, but your post got me mildly curious..

I see this book, which is explicitly marketed as "Kindle+ Edition". So perhaps Kindle+ is some sort of library of Amazon-exclusive editions? I don't know: I'm just guessing on the basis of very limited information.

I also saw that book when I searched for Kindle+ online. As far as I can tell "Kindle+ Edition" is just a subtitle added by the author. That book has been available since early last year and so I believe it predates this new meaning of Kindle+. Another book by the same author published around the same time is titled “Ferry to Williamstown: Kindle Plus Edition”.

Ah. Fair enough. Well, it was a nice idea while it lasted

I saw a mention of "KU rebrand" in some Kindle related software. It could be a coincidence or could be another hint that Kindle Unlimited is getting a name change.

That makes sense to me. I am sure that calling it "Unlimited" when it excludes the most popular books has led to lots of complaints.

And you don't own the titles (unless you don't use KU and buy* them), can only read on a Kindle or Kindle App and only titles from largest publishers are available elsewhere.

Exactly in what sense is a KU subscription "Unlimited"?

[* Some countries Amazon doesn't display the actually invalid licence under the sale price as in fact the copyright is the same as any copyrighted content. A paper book has a licence to read it, but not copy it.]

A revamp does seem to be in the works. It seems that authors can now request KU books be available via Libby. Combine that with this potential rebranding and I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon has a whole thing coming up this Fall/Winter to refresh the whole KU system.

I've read a similar rumour which stated those library loans would require an Amazon device/app to read them and likely only be available to those who already have a KU subscription. Evidently no ePub versions would be available. Admittedly, this rumour is likely to be about as substantial as most "reporting" on BadeReader.

I believe the Libby lending feature on Kindle was limited to the US due to an exclusive agreement or something similar.

Kobo's OverDrive feature is different, but it's still region restricted and isn't available in Japan to begin with. However, since my Kobo Sage was once set to the US region, the OverDrive feature has been unlocked, and it looks like I can use it in Tokyo without any issues (though I can't test it anyway, as my local e-library doesn't use OverDrive).
