The hardware may or may not be damaged. But you can damage what's on the SSD.

Yes, it can. Though it's rare. Damage to CRT monitors years ago. More recently Intel CPU power management and fried CPUs.

Premature wear of an SSD.

Software can damage hardware. Try using software to turn off your fan before overclocking your CPU. There's usually a BIOS safeguard to shutdown when it reaches dangerous temperatures, but it can also be disabled.

Operating system is software.

That can happen in Windows 10 as well. It certainly not new to Windows 11. It's easily avoidable if you look before you click. I'm a heavy user of menu search to open local apps/locations/utilities on both 10 and 11. Windows isn't my primary OS, but neither do I consider it my enemy.

I just know this works differently than it used to. I don't know when it changed, but I do know that it changed.

As far as avoiding it, I don't use Windows enough to know how to avoid it (and I really don't care). I thought this difference came with Windows 11, but maybe Microsoft recently foisted it on Windows 10 users also.

What I do know is that, when I do a Menu search in Linux Mint, I find my application and am not sent off on a wild Bing goose chase under Edge.

This "feature" should be optional in Windows, it shouldn't be the default that you have to avoid.

Isn't the fact that you have something that works the way you want it to sufficient? Why the need to decide what an OS you don't use enough to matter "should" (or shouldn't) do? My Arch machine works exactly the way I want it to, as well. That's why I chose it (and more than likely the reason you settled on Mint as well). I feel no pressure to bash on an OS I only have to use whenever I choose to.

I was simply pointing out that what you disliked about Windows 11 didn't actually begin with Windows 11.

Did we read the same original story from the link in the first message in this thread? Bolding mine.

Quote:
Not only is the update making solid-state drives (SSD) and hard-disk drives (HDD) disappear from the OS, but it's also completely nuking certain storage to the point of data being unrecoverable.
That quote certainly sounds as if it agrees with Jon said when he wrote "But you can damage what's on the SSD."

Because I have to support my wife's Windows 11 machines. Otherwise I would never touch Windows. I used to be able to find her applications by doing a simple Menu search. Now my Menu searches result in totally unrelated crap via Bing and Edge. It's not just Microsoft. Google searches are becoming less and less useful by the day. Instead finding what you want, you're led down a path they want you to go down. At least you can turn off AI in Google search (under Firefox at any rate, I don't know about Chrome).

I didn't argue with you when you said it didn't start with Windows 11. But at some point in Windows 10 it was changed.

Unfortunately, you are incorrect. I doubt many, if any, of us here have experienced it personally. But it can happen. What happens more often, as several here have mentioned already, is that it damages the data that is stored on the hardware. Which can create a problem that is even more difficult to fix than replacement of damaged hardware. You don't want an OS damaging hardware, OR damaging data. Nor should it allow other players to damage hardware or data. Any of these bad outcomes will be a major ding to an OS'es reputation.
