Or perhaps the cashier was just clueless, or not interested in taking the 5 seconds to help. Some people suck.

We heard last night that my uncle (mother's brother, so not THAT uncle) has died.
Last Saturday he celebrated his 80th birthday, my sister and I didn't go because we had tickets to go see a musical (it was only decided a couple of days before to celebrate his birthday, so we there wasn't time to arrange different tickets). In the past he and his wife were very close to our parents, and my mother's sister's family. But ever since his wife was diagnosed with a terminal terminal brain tumor the contact was low and they focused more on her family (which is completely understandable). My uncle was diagnosed with Parkinson's and dementia (though the latter was early stages). A couple of years ago, after a fall and a Covid infection, he moved to a care home. After that he kept more in contact with his wife's family than with his own. Last weekend he seemed as healthy as he could be and in good spirits. Hopefully he didn't suffer (haven't heard what happened yet). Now we have to wait and see what is going to happen. Who will organize everything and if/when there will be funeral. |

On the other hand there are the almost noiseless electric scooters that come from behind at speed.

Body cam strapped to back of head streaming to smartphone/watch with a scooter detection alarm app.
My nanny state government has started installing speed bumps on footpaths (pavements, sidewalks) Last edited by BetterRed; 08-24-2025 at 12:58 AM. |

In here, the Region (despite not being Lombardy, nor Lazio) has the most concentration of shopping centers per citizen, also the biggest one (probably one of the biggest in Italy too), went in there 'cause was the only place were an unofficial shop of my only and fav shoes' brand would sell them (he was selling only that brand); shop closed (definetively): funny that (as he mentioned too, early) any others - amazon included - won't have the cush-up versions, or others types (they have just some).
In fact I didn't find them, because the third party shops (that retains more than one brand) has their lines and policies, which includes not the possibility to choose online from the brand, wait, and buy (or neither choose, pay, and wait: nope). And they don't even have stickers ![]() |

Considering the number of bicycles and scooters (both manual and electric) that are speeding on the sidewalks, pedestrian only paths, etc. in this area, sounds like a good idea to me. The meathead on an e-scooter screaming "Get the F*CK out of my way" when you are on a pedestrian only path which experience I got to enjoy during my morning walk today had me wishing for speed bumps and/or cattlestops along the route. The signage is rather clear in showing a cyclist and a scooter user dismounted and pushing their rides.

I'm worried about how wheelchairs would navigate them.

Precisely, and folks with baby strollers/prams/buggies, toddlers on reins will trip over them, and if you use a cane like me, stepping over/on them is dodgy too.
But wait… neighbour has told me they are temporary, pending completion of a 'new' Metro line, much of which is underground or in deep cuttings. It's not really 'new', they're converting an existing 'double decker, heavy rail' line. We couldn't comprehend it either, but she showed me the email from the local MP, and former Minister for Transport… nuff said ![]() MP |

Rule for bicycling/scootering on shared path:
If you don't actually hit anybody you've committed no foul. You can race head on to a pedestrian as long as you detour at the last second. Taking this to the extreme shows what a masterful bicyclist you are. I'm a pedestrian and I no longer go on scenic shared paths. They are just too unpleasant. It's better just to walk the streets through industrial zones. |

In my case today, the path is not shared. It is strictly pedestrian and bicyclists and scooter users are required to walk and push their vehicles. One path in a nearby city has mini-speed bumps on a couple of pedestrian only paths. For people in wheelchairs they are not much of an obstacle since they tend to move slowly. Unless you are running while pushing your baby buggy, the kid might feel a bit of rocking but nothing that unpleasant. If you are on a bicycle or scooter and going fast, yeah, they are a bit painful much like hitting a sleeping policeman at 50kmh instead of the recommended 15kmh. I watched one young driver in a Tesla hit one at close to 50kmh. The sound effect was interesting for certain values of interesting involving MacPherson struts testing their limit.
