Going by the support from various posters for their colour eInk devices, would you find it correct for someone to post "We love colour eInk. We need colour eInk. We want more colour eInk devices. We don't see any need for a 7" non-colour eInk."
Perhaps "some posters on MobileRead agree with me" would be more correct. |

What we need is more choice for Kobo Readers. Some want color. Some don't. Some want a larger screen. Some don't. So what we need is a Libra 2 replacement to help give users more choice. We also need a better 8" and 10.3" BW Readers (with proper batteries). Also, an 8" color screen would give some what they want. Then we'd have enough choice for what users want.

We know that GoodeReader doesn't know. They make stuff up and when like the stopped clock they're right occasionally, it's because they stole it from a reputable source. So the rule of thumb is always to disbelieve them when they claim to be breaking a story.

It's not worth the time to read or reply to his posts. I would guess, if it’s true, either these are two new devices exclusively for the European market, Kobos with Tolino software which is planned (B for B-market = Europe ![]() ![]() Last edited by Sonnenfee; Yesterday at 04:54 AM. |

Why bother with expense of FCC if it's only for Europe?

In my opinion, because Kobo as the manufacturer of the devices, is based in Canada.

For what it may be worth, I do not believe the new B variants will have buttons. They will look and behave just like the original but with updated electronics and likely a larger battery (2000mAH to match the P365 is my favourite possibility).
As for the software for Europe? That is already being tested as the 5.10 firmware for the Libra Colour and the Clara Colour/BW to meet EU accessibility requirements. So far, it is not what I consider quite ready for general release though switching from QT5 to QT6 is likely the cause of many of the deficiencies. As for FCC approval because Kobo is headquartered in Canada? For Canada, the CAN ICES-003/NMB-003 listing is the important one. The FCC listing is only necessary for devices that would be marketed in the US. |

Is the FCC approval seen as an industry standard internationally?

That is one reason you see that alphabet soup of listings in the About page for a Kobo ereader. To quote from one document I have around: Quote:

Same in Australia, we have our own frameworks for all and sundry, and yet a lot of advertising material for products also bears that FCC approved info. At the very least it's minimum standards I suppose.

Each regulatory authority has it's own. In the EU there are regulatory authorities for each nation, but harmonised standards passed in to law in each country. Domestic / retail things have CE approval (not just things with a radio) (IS in Ireland DIN in Germany etc). Commercial / Professional radios use ETSI. Japan is stricter and different FM spectrum. I never heard of FCC having any value in the UK or EU. A different set of standards. The USA uses a different system for terrestrial TV, different set of WiFi channels, different mains electricity, different channel spacing on cable, slightly different FM & AM systems (with different channel steps, FM premphasis), different spectrum allocations etc. |
