Lightbulb Feature idea for Calibre (Unsure if it can be achieved with plugins but wth....)

Hi,

I would like to see FULL image-editing facilities inside Calibre
by utilizing a favourite graphics program (Photoshop, Paint.Net)
already on the system.

I used to use an audio program (Cakewalk) that used a similar
method for editing audio, (click on an audio sample, specify action,
and the external editor opens automatically) and Cakewalk and
Calibre are not so dissimilar, only in filetype.

When edited to satisfaction, click save in the external editor
and it automatically updates the host file in host application.

I'm certain that Cakewalk used .TMP files to achieve this
but I'm unsure about Calibre's file handling.

I envisage things as follows :

1 : A dedicated section in Calibre Preferences to choose favourite
image editor location.

2 : A tab on the right-click menu in Calibre saying 'Edit Image
in External Program'.

I hope and pray that someone somewhere can be inspired to
build such an application, because, let's face it ;

Editing images is a pain in the butt and anything that can make
it any easier can only be a good thing, right ?

I'm welcoming any feedback, even
explanations of why it's impossible to do ! :

Thanks for your time and trouble to read this,

Peace & Love,

Gord.

You can already U(npack) any EPUB in Calibre: Explode: <edit whatever you select with the system tools>: Rebuild

You are not limited to just using Calibre.

No matter what tool that is built in, there are folk that hate it.
Using the Unpack method, the hate must be directed inward

I guess I don't understand the problem, because such a function exists after all.

Not quite sure why you want to add something that is already there. I have calibre's ebook-editor and right click on the cover image in Details set to use paint.NET or GIMP to open. If I click on an image found using the Open book folder, a right click gets me the full selection of image editing programs installed on Windows.

Right click on an image in either of the those two locations and edit the open with applications list.

I guess I should have delved a bit deeper into the manual !

Many thanks for your replies and help,

That's one issue with calibre being basically a Swiss army knife app. There are so many features and alternate ways of accessing them, that it can be a pain trying to actually find and use them.

Much like the comment about Microsoft Word that "the average user only uses 15% of the features. Sadly, almost every user uses a different 15%".

Also, you only really need 5 functions (which EVERYBODY uses):
  • Open
  • Close
  • Cut
  • Paste
  • Save
The remaining functions are just decoration.

Now that I have to use my Paperwhite to transfer my books to Calibre, the covers provided in the book are b/w. I know I can download a color cover, but is there a plug-in to replace the b/w one in the book with the new color cover? I may not have my PW forever and I want color covers when I open the book.

Update: Was directed to 2 plug-ins. Would still be nice if this was a toggle in Preferences and it worked for KFX.

Question Romance.io - Spice Level / Metadata Scraper

If I could pull the consolidated data, I could then use the tag management system to customize.
This would be AMAZING! I have a custom "spice level" column with a 1-5 integer rating, and it would be so helpful not to have to manually look up each book on Romance.io to find the spice rating and then manually add it to the custom column in the metadata field...it is tedious and annoying.

Can this even be done because it is a custom column and not Calibre's default metadata field?

Thanks!

I'm afraid the answer is no, metadata plugins only update custom columns.

I think a GUI plugin can update anything though.

Yes, GUI plugins can do more-or-less anything, including updating custom columns.

I honestly don't know what plugins or methods could or couldn't do these things. I just wanted to suggest a plugin idea that would be helpful to me and others.

Creating plugins is a land of magical coding that my brain has been struggling to learn and comprehend.

I will say from a very quick look at that website today that I think it could all be done with a Romance.io metadata plugin if someone took the same approach that the goodreads metadata plugin does. Where you bring the extra rating down back as a fake identifier value (like I do with "grrating"), and then have a custom column that displays that "identifier" value - which is actually the rating. Perhaps the only thing you cannot do (or maybe you can - I've not bothered to try it) is display that custom column that is "built from another column" as a rating column. So you would instead see the raw numeric value rather than stars.

You're correct: composite columns (built from other columns) can't show stars. However, it would be easy to do a search and replace, copying the "identifier" rating to a custom rating column. This could be done automatically using action chains when books are imported.
