Meanwhile, even though I've been a happy Thunderbird user for years and want to support them, they insist on calling their upcoming paid hosting service, "Thundermail", which just, ugh. It sounds like a 12-year old naming their imaginary comic book character.

One friend of mine is grumbling about their Linux box. It was build about 10 years ago and is an x386 install. He decided he wanted to update and oopss... the distribution no longer exists. He tried several distributions booting from USB to see if they could do an update and no joy. At this time, it looks as if a wipe and reinstall is the only way for him to go partly since the filesystem was a ReiserFS variant and no longer supported and partly since he wants to upgrade to a 64 bit system.

Not directly. As a former ReiserFS user, it was a rubbish filesystem. There are multiple data loss bugs and performance bottlenecks in the ReiserFS code. Reiser didn't seem to care. He had an abrasive relationship with the kernel development community and allegedly his response was that we were using it wrong. I'm surprised Linus Torvalds put up with it for as long as he did.
The ReiserFS code was dropped from the main line kernel late last year and I say good riddance. |

Anyone that doesn't like there being more than one linux distribution is free to not use any of them.
Anyone that expects to be able to update one distribution to a different one is free to implement that. I keep a separate /home partition and have never really trusted a major update anyway and tend to do a fresh install, usually to a new disk. (Which allows me to go running back to the previous OS if need be with minimal pain.) |

My major issue with the plethora of Linux distributions is that most of them seem to go out of their way to supply incompatibilities. Within distro families, it's not as bad but if you go from a distribution family to a different family (Slackware, Arch or SUSE or pretty much any other family) distribution, a wipe and reinstall (or in my case, spinning up a new VM) is the best way to go.
I currently have 9 VMs in use, Windows 11 Preview, MacOS and 7 different Linux distributions though some might argue about VMWare's Proton OS being a distribution. Other Linux VMs are openSUSE Tumbleweed, Gentoo Linux & Arch Linux. Hmmm... looking at it, 5 of the Linux distros I have installed are rolling release variants. Gentoo is the most "fun" since it goes back to the bad old days of compiling from source. Last edited by DNSB; Yesterday at 11:01 PM. |

One of the most frustrating thing about purchasing music on line is that the basic metadata is often missing (such as the Composer and the actual year each track was released). I end up having to spend time researching to locate the missing information and often I'm not able to locate the information. I would think that it should be easy for those who put music on line to provide all of the metadata.

I would say that USB Type C is one of the more successful standards.
Which is not to deny that "USB Type C" means nothing except that the plug will fit. But I can still buy some crappy electronic product and not end up with a custom charger. I just bought a low-end foldable Bluetooth keyboard for 7 € and it charges nicely on USB Type C. https://www.action.com/de-de/p/32032...lose-tastatur/ |

USB C plug is a good standard but what it's capable of varies and you can be caught out. For example my laptop has several usb c ports only one of which is capable of charging the laptop. I've not tried plugging the power into the other ports but it not charging is the best I could expect and frying the motherboard and causing a fire the worst.
