I took a break from Dungeon Crawler Carl to listen to Esi Edugyan's Washington Black. What an all around pleasant distraction.

Next up was God, No! by Penn Jullette. Fun, sometimes horrifying, reminiscences hung on alternative 10 commandments Now reading: Antimatter Blues by Edward Ashton. The sequel to Micky 7. |

I just finished the 22nd book in the Agent Pendergast series by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child; Angel of Vengeance.
IMHO this series is overdue for an ending. What started out as crime thrillers with a paranormal hint has gone too far and isn't believable anymore. I don't mind fantastical books/series but this series started out rooted firmly in reality. It isn't that the books are now bad, but the story has clearly run its course and the authors are now making it more and more fantastical to keep going. Just send Pendergast off on his well earned retirement and let him pop up occasionally in the Nora Kelly series by the same authors (which I am enjoying so far). I also got annoyed with the authors showing off; using more difficult words than needed and describing historical things in detail when that isn't necessary. Now I'm in the mood for a sci-fy thriller so I've picked up Antarctica Station by A.G. Riddle. |

Started reading the Hollow Season by Joshua Luke Wisham it sounded promising, a story about a man who returns to his childhood hometown to bury his brother. The blurb describes how something is going on below the surface with strange whispers being heard and time slips occurring, sounds great, but and this is a big but, the writing is just one long continuous monologue of what the character is doing. Three pages, yes three pages were spent describing the character walking up to an old man to talk to him, then he says 11 words to him and another 3 pages are spent describing this and him then walking away, I got 57 pages in (out of 403) and gave up. Switched to The Meg a story about a giant killer shark, much easier to read

Finished Meg, predictably it was a lot like Jaws - really there's not much different you can do with a shark story. It was ok, written well enough, a quick Summer read.

I'm on book 2 of the A Touch of Power series by Jay Boyce. 18 year old Jade has been bedridden and unable to walk since birth. She doesn't begrudge her parents showering most of their attention on her healthy younger brother. She's had tons of time to read and watch TV.
Then she wakes up in a medieval-ish world where magic is real and people can bring up HUD style displays in their vision, showing their vital stats, magical abilities, and skills. She sees that her special ability is Siphon. After any skin to skin contact with another person, she can see their stats and select one magical ability and one skill to siphon 1 point each from, and the person she takes from will sometime later get back an extra half point, so no lasting detriment. Oh, just one problem. This world also has a multitude of deadly monsters so cities are walled and *everyone* learns to use knives, swords, archery, or other weapons and never goes outside unarmed. It's been quite a while since the last traveler was there. Yeah, it's LitRPG but I'm enjoying it. |
