Good evening to all!
It's been a loooong time since I've been here... As most of the previous messages, I'm stuck on updating kual after the problem related to certificate. I have an old kindle touch with firmware 5.3.7.2. What I've done: - removed kual - run DevCerts keystore bin file for K5 - copied kual kdk 2.0 azw2 Now I get "The item is not signed by an authorised developer" error. Any clue? Thank you! |

@silver18 Remove that that azw2 file ( = "kindlet" version of KUAL) and instead install the KUAL bin installer ( = "booklet" version of KUAL) using ;log mrpi search bar command. Put the bin file into "mrpackages" directory.

Problem is: - my Kindle doesn't have MRPI so i installed it by copying extensions and mrpackages folders in it (I have an old extensions folder since I've been using KUAL for ages but the result is the same when placing directly MRInstaller folder inside extensions folder or when removing all other extensions and have a clean install) - I placed Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7.37_install.bin inside mrpackages folder and ran ;log mrpi on the search bar. This ends up in finding no results (nothing is installed) - I also rebooted the kindle to test once again - I also tried placing the bin file in the root (/mnt/us) and updating via old menu but the entry is greyed out - I tried installing the bin file for K5 from DevCerts-20250419-KeyStore using MRPI with no luck Thanks again!! |

Can that old firmware run the KUAL installer bin using "Update My Kindle' option?? (if using that way the bin file doesn't go into "mrpackages", it goes into the root level of kindle drive)
You installed DevCerts keystore bin that way? As for MRPI & ;log mrpi : you probably should reinstall the hotfix bin (using Update My Kindle)? One thing to have in mind is that if you reinstall the hotfix bin (from NiLuJe's Snapshots thread) you're gonna need to also reinstall DevCerts keystore bin again after the hotfix because hotfix installer hasn't been updated / repackaged to have the new developer.keystore ![]() ![]() |

I also tried directly swapping the new developer.keystore. I placed the bin file in the root level of the Kindle. Quote:
As regards the first one, I didn't ever installed it. I jailbreked the Kindle in 2011-2012 and nothing of this existed. After some years of working on it, developing my own extension (Komic, here in the forum), I just ended up reading epun with CoolReader. It seems also that the K5 jailbreak hotfix Is related to >5.6 firmware and that's not my case. Even KUAL should work with the 2.0 azw2 (like did before). Anyway, if the hotfix is needed I'm going to install it. Just please point me to the right one. Thank you again! |

So, just thinking...
Since I didn't jailbreak with newer methods, I don't have the ;log mrpi command added to /usr/share/webkit-1.0/pillow/debug_cmds.json. I could add it (or hijack other shell script)... Back in the old days I would have set up a new bin file with kindletool and a simple script to backup the debug_cmds.json and place a new one there with the ;log mrpi added. Something easier now? And then...using mrpi is needed to install the booklet version of KUAL when on my kindle is supposed to work the azw2 version. Is it worth the effort or I'm going to end up with nothing? Thanks again! |

Thank you! So, moving on... Updated to 5.3.7.3 Applied jailbreak (K5 JailBreak (5.0.x - 5.4.4.2)) Applied DevCerts bin Installed KUAL 2.0 azw2 It works now. Problem is I can no longer log in with ssh over wifi nor on USB... I know the root password I had (stored in my ssh client) but can't track down what's wrong...Any advice? Still need to check the rest of hacks. Anyway, thank you all! |

You're making simple things needlessly complicated.
Booklet version of KUAL works on Kindle Touch. And so should the jailbreak hotfix and MRPI. The hotfix is what adds that ;log command into that JSON file. I used kindlet (azw2) version of KUAL on my old PW1 then later replaced it with booklet version while my PW1 was on firmware 5.4.x. |

It's actually complicated since most of the environment now is based on newer jailbreak, assuming you have MRPI, MKK and so on already on the Kindle.
My Kindle had nothing of it, just plain base 2014 jailbreak! Anyhow, upgrading to firmware 5.3.7.3 actually works. I managed to upgrade usbnet to 0.22.N and solved also the timeout error along with the modded root password. Long story short: if you have 5.3.7.2 firmware, move to 5.3.7.3. Thank you! |
