For what little it may be worth, the 8.5.101 calibre install will run in safe mode on Windows 11 26120.4520 but requires setting QT OPENGL environment variable to software to run in normal mode.

There werent any changes to anything Qt related in this preview, just some changes to unrelated parts of the program. Are you sure this is something specific to the preview? calibre continues to run as before on my windows 11 system.

This was after I updated to the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview update for the beta channel and then updated calibre 8.3 to 8.5.101. I tend to believing it was an issue triggered by the Windows update, hence, my comment for what little it may be worth. I've reported what I think is a bug to Microsoft.

Ah, ok. yes likely a windows beta issue. There have been no changes to Qt and the related parts of calibre since 8.0 was released.

Released preview 8.7.101 this has a completely re-written backend to use the Piper neural TTS voices. It no longer needs a separate process for piper (indeed it doesn't use piper code at all, only the models, and runs the models directly itself). This improves performance/robustness and also implements normalization of audio samples generated from the models which might increase audio clarity for some voices.

I'd appreciate some testing to ensure I didnt break anything too badly.

Windows 11 pc here. piper keeps pausing then waiting before starting next sentence. sometimes it will read a whole paragraph be fine then stop. not set to stop after each sentence

Works fine on my Win 11 machine, can you try rebooting into safe mode and see if it makes a difference? What are the specs (CPU/RAM) of your computer?
