Yes, it is used everywhere except on e-ink Kindle devices. Its presence is the reason why it has never been possible to remove DRM from books downloaded to Fire tablets.

But isn’t the jailbreak-to-be patch a response to the bounty program report from the devs of the upcoming jailbreak? If so, it would just be a coincidence that they are also strengthening their drm. If and when that comes to be, would it mean only older devices can be de-drmed?

Amazon is working very hard at making me an ex kindle ebook buyer. I have averaged over 100 ebooks a year with kindle so it is not like I will not have something to read. Plus I buy from 2 other ebook stores.

I do not understand your logic here. Unless the jailbreak devs are holding back further exploits, this new firmware version will not be jailbreak-able for now. That makes this the perfect time to add new DRM that requires a jailbreak to defeat.

If I am right then only Kindles running firmware older than this latest one will be usable for DRM removal. But there is still a lot of uncertainty. The DRM change might never be actually activated by Amazon.

On my side I’ve seen a couple of reports on Discord that the jailbreak apparently does survive the update to 5.18.4 with the latest hotfix. I’ll wait for a few more positive reports before taking the plunge though

the jailbreak devs said they were reporting the exploit to Amazon for two reasons, one to get the bounty and two, because it was such big exploit, it was only the right thing to do. Under the agreement, they have to wait until a patch has been released before they can release the jailbreak (and the exploit) to the world.

The release of 5.18.4 allows them to release the jailbreak for 5.18.3 under the terms of the bug bounty. The only real question is if the jailbreak is ready for release.

Thanks for the info, I wasn’t aware of that and have been trying for weeks to get them to show up on my Kindles, to no avail; now I know why!
