One local place used to have what they called a communal garden but was closer to an allotment since the planting spots were raised garden beds. It was shut down due to ongoing issues with people doing their vegetable "shopping" there. Two neighbours of mine had a spot there for quite a few years. One weekend a couple of years ago, when they went to tend their plot, their tomato plants had been stripped bare for the second year in a row. At that point, they like many of the other gardeners, decided against renewing their spot.

It is disgusting how people think theft is perfectly OK, they try to justify it by saying it's only some veg, but they forget we've had to buy the seeds, seed compost, potting on compost, heat the greenhouse, then spend our time looking after the seeds/ plants, planting out, feeding the plants, watering them etc |

People using bluetooth headsets to talk on the phone, in itself not a bad thing but the number of times I've thought someones talking to me, realise they aren't then wonder if they are having some sort of episode to then realise they must be on the phone

I woke up half an hour ago, at 4 am, because a mosquito bit me on a finger. Those bonier places, tops of my hands and feet, shins, etc always itch so bad.
Getting a screen for my windows is possible, but it would mean that I can barely open the Velux window and since my bedroom is in the attic it can get hot and I need to be able to air it out at night (I’m in the Netherlands so airco isn’t common and expensive to run). I used some cream and took an anti histamine pill and they are starting to work. But by now I’m wide awake. I ordered a heat pen thing i.e. and paid extra to have it delivered today. It’s supposed to work in seconds. I hope it does, since the worse of the mosquito time last year was from mid August to late September. An anti mosquito stick with Deet also works, but it makes my bed stink of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I never heard Velux as a common name for them. I just noticed that mine actually is a Velux. I kind of like the European "tilt & turn" windows. But in my kitchen I have one that can only open about 40 degrees because of the countertop. A good old American "double hung" window would be much better. |

When we insulate the roof I also want to change the window to a more energy efficient one. Not sure if you can just get the glass replaced or if you have the frame replace too. If the latter's the case I might get a different type of window, one that has the hinge higher up, so I can open it even more when I have a screen installed. Which reminds me I have to find someone to service the window; the open/close mechanism is hard to use, especially when closing the window you have to slam it shut in order for the bar to lock. |

It works smoothly but that bar has a locking force as if it's designed to keep burglars out. I don't know about the Velux, but the normal "tilt & turn" have an eccentric bolt at every securing point for adjusting the tightness of the seal. I also have a window where the floating pivot at the bottom for tilt has broken off. It's called a "Wippe" or "rocker". |
