"Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
In Jessup's supernova-bright novella, his first stand-alone publication, pregnant space voyager Ekhi is rescued from her ailing vessel by the crew of a scavenger ship. Their captain, mysterious, doll-like cyborg Itsasu, mourns her husband's death, and has been yearning to bring him back to life with the Ortzadar engine her ship is secretly carrying. She reluctantly allows Ekhi to join her crew, but keeps her under strict supervision. The other crew members struggle with various personal issues brought sharply into perspective by a sudden alien invasion and the discovery that the ship's AI is playing a deadly game of its own. Jessup describes his surrealistic space opera vision with bleak, elegant prose and a dash of black humor. (Apr.)

Also from Apex site... Looks like they are four separate novellas that are being introduced

Limited Edition novellas
Open Your Eyes by Paul Jessup.

Orgy of Souls by Wrath James White and Maurice Broaddus .

Steeped in the legends of the Nephilim, The Convent of the Pure is the first installment of a steampunk novella trilogy by Sara M. Harvey.

Didn't search far enough for the fourth

It's a standalone. Weird space opera lovechild, this one. Good, though, read it yesterday.

For example if you like the extremes of Asher or Reynolds then you might want to give this a go, but it definitely is further into the bizarre.

The PDF I think is likely one used in publishing, as it is big. Apparently will sell ebook via Fictionwise as usual later, if you prefer that, then should be no problem if you wait a bit.

Worth having a look.

This is definitely not true. You don't know what you are talking about here.

Look at Fictionwise for several _multiformat_ Apex titles. I've bought some of them.

They also have a free online magazine.

It is true in this particular case this is a big unwieldy pdf, but as a spur of the moment taster for a limited time from a small press operation I don't think that is as strange a decision as say multinational backed Suvudu, with their permanent intentions only having PDF.

So some valid criticism of this particular item, but the rest is way off.

Came in to say this. Jason's actually come on here and taken our advice on how to price the ebooks, and whether they should be DRMed or not.

Hey everybody,

Sorry for tossing up a big PDF file. Next time I give out a freebie it'll be smaller. I'd forgotten this one had imbedded images, thus ballooning it's size.

And, I agree, a plot synopsis would have been better.

The book is a standalone. It just happens to be our fourth published novella. I've been toying with the idea of branding them as a special line of books.

While I won't lay claim to being an expert in eBooks, I think I got the basics. In fact, many on this board have been a big help in making sure that we price our books fairly, make them available on as many formats as possible, with as little DRM as possible.

Thank you to those who had nice things to say in my (and Apex's) defense.

THANKS! Got it!

It's not all that big, 8 kb, and 148 pages. I'll read it on the PC. First paragraph is a grabber! :-)

one should only look at a number of threads in this forums' section. Look at how enthusiastic writers/authors and forum members responded to a html/prc/epub offerings. while providing freebies is a nice gesture, providing multiple formats almost guarantee downloads and readerships.
when suvudu free library was launched, i dowloaded prc version of t a pratt's first marla mason series. i enjoyed it, and bought book two rightaway. being able to download doesnot mean automatic readership. i read while i'm in bus, train and in the car (not driving). i dont read while in front of my pc/laptop - as is often the case with pdf. i work. oh, i tried reading pdf on my windows mobile and iPhone. hate it.
so, why not just release in multiple format? if there's some copyrights issue preventing release of such, informing it would help me (us) understand the reasoning.
i just dont get the unwillingness (is it?) or stubborness (i might be way off base here). but it's just bug me. why limit the chance of readership by limiting format? look at mr. carver. a lot of members here helped him create nice versions of his free novels. i could be wrong, but from his posting and encoraging other writers to do as he did, mr. carver seems to enjoy the many positive responses he got.

Book has wrong metadata; it lists the author as "Owner." (My laptop lists "owner" as the creator of all documents; I believe it's the default identity for a WinXP installation.)

The images are saved as RGB images, despite being grayscale. Converting them to grayscale saves a bit of filesize, but not much. (8.5 mb for 35,000 word story! Even with the images, that's a lot.)

That's a great deal for Jennifer Pelland's Unwelcome Bodies, for one.

Strange - they appear to be $4.70 each, not $2. Perhaps you meant "only for people in the USA"?

I'm verifying the $2.00 price here, so I'm going to "correct" the OP's title.

The additional $2.70 is probably VAT and Amazon's extra charge tacked on for "delivery" outside the US ($1.99?).

Damn, I didn't realize that non-US orders were charged an additional $2.70. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for correcting the thread title for me.

Is the extra $2.70 strictly VAT charges?
