Set up a calibre development environment. All calibre source will then be available to you to change as you wish.

I advise you to set up a local GIT repository so you can incorporate future changes to calibre into you local copy. How to do that is described in the above linked-to page. There are also many graphic GIT clients floating around. I use SourceTree.

I answered your question "how do I do it?" It's up to you to decide if what you want is worth the effort.

Read the manual. You will see that you don't compile or rebuild anything. Changing something and running calibre from source takes seconds. Many people, including some who don't program, do it. In fact it is easier than rebuilding a plugin.
