What "recourse" would you expect? Any storage medium can go bad over time, no matter the brand. The Libra 2 is nearly four years old now, well past the time even the most generous statutory guarantees would cover a small consumer electronic device.

If it were in warranty it would obviously be a different matter.

I meant that with other devices you don't even have the option to replace the SD card because it's not removable

Btw I have stuff much older than 4 yrs and they still work fine except for the battery.

In my opinion, the original microSD card, a MkFounder brand, started to fail when writing data. The daily crashes always began when I tried to highlight text and it wouldn’t work, and then the device would reboot without saving anything. I was able to successfully clone the card (so reading still worked fine) onto a new one, and it’s been working perfectly ever since. Admittedly, the brand isn’t exactly one of the most reputable…
Nevertheless, it's an advantage to be able to fix it yourself by simply replacing the card.

Because it's entropy, not a carefully-timed deliberate obsolencence. I have Kobos far older also. It's not "a thing with Kobo", it's a thing with electronics of all kind. I had a hard drive go bad just a few weeks ago. It happens.

I've had 20 out of 40 HDDs fail in a week and also a 25+ year old laptop / HDD that still goes (though CMOS batteries and main batteries are dead. "Press any key to continue"). I've some older PCs that work, or did last time I checked.

I've a 1929 radio that works, though it needed some repairs. I've had 3 DVD players or player/recorders fail, but the first one I ever bought (22 years ago?) still works.

My worst case for failure was a Samsung NVME SSD. I installed it, copied the old boot drive over to it, removed the old boot drive for storage and all looked fine. 2 days later, powered the computer on and it would not book. No boot device found. Re-installed the original SSD and no problems. Connected the Samsung SSD in the secondary SSD slot and ran Samsung's diagnostics. The drive was seen but multiple pages of error messages. Contacted Samsung customer support and after 15 minutes of discussion, they shipped me a replacement drive along with the packaging to return the failed drive for analysis. The replacement drive is coming up on two years and no issues.

All I know is this pops up on a rather regular basis here. I don't see many or actually any reports of Kindles ceasing to function because the internal memory is corrupted

When I look through the Kindle forums on MobileRead, Reddit and the Kindle modding community, there are quite a few complaints that would appear to be due to the storage being corrupted, failed to read-only mode, etc. The only real difference is that those Kobo models with removable µSD storage are able to recover from those failures and newer Kindles like the fixed storage Kobos are unable to.

Perhaps you might also want to check the Kubrick: Live CD to debrick Kindle 3, 4, and Touch thread for examples.
