Amazon and DRM changes

GitHub removed the entire repository for DeDRM until the LCP support was pulled. If you want it, I imagine it is still out there somewhere -- the internet is forever. Although I believe Readium also changed things so that it no longer works anyway. If someone's updated it, they'd be foolish to put it on GitHub.

DeDRM was great until it became a joke when its creator complied by reversing their program to prevent people from removing DRM found in .lcpdf files. These companies trying to stop DRM removals just make me bored at what the world has become. I want knowledge for free. But the people are not playing that game. It bores me. But it is what it is.

Paying for your content is not the issue It's DRM that's the issue. It prevents you from reading your eBooks where you want.

They were DMCA'd. They were risking takedown by not complying, which would make the entirety of DeDRM unavailable.

I have the version of DeDRM with LCP support. It only works with LCP 1.0. That version of DeDRM cannot remove LCP v2.5.

What they don't entail

Think of a provincial US library from about 80 years ago and you'll get an idea of how dire things are in a good part of the world. Don't mistake me, the above is still good for someone whose interest is in local language literary fiction and academic texts. But if what you love is genre fiction in its original language, good bloody luck to you.

So far, my only workable solution has been a combo of Kobo's deep sales (and even there I have to lie that I'm from the US, because those never get offered on my local store page) with easy DRM removal as a very nice perk + trawling local used bookstores and antiquarian shops in search for the rare physical original language fantasy or sci-fi. Most assuredly not libraries.

(I could rant forever about the need for regional pricing across the board, particularly for digital items that don't cost anything to ship across the world, but most stores don't want to bother with that, given how open to abuse it is, on top of book publishers themselves being resistant).

Thank you Rooo for letting us know how it is for you. I think it can be too easy to forget country differences and the difficulties some face more than others to pursue their reading interests.

Yeah, it's mostly the same story here. And as I no longer read paper books, used bookstores are no option for me. I have to buy everything I want to read. And yes, Kobo has never offered any sales for my country either. Amazon sales are often worldwide, Kobo's are not (at least, that I've seen).

bustacap was merely responding to the expressed desire to get "knowledge" for free. If you want free books, there it is. Not as a "miracle solution for reading".

I'm really not a fan of those who feel free to cast aspersions at Americans just because. Best to keep nationalities out of it and stick to behaviors. And what makes you think bustacap is American anyway? Or was it just an opportunity to take a shot?

Perhaps. Just the same, I don't think it contributes to civilized discourse to ascribe behaviors to nationalities in contexts where it doesn't matter. It's unnecessary; just leave the nationality part out of it. It would have altered Rhooo's comment not one iota. And especially if bustacap isn't American (and I see no indication from their post or profile), then it really was just a chance to take a shot.

People can be private if they'd like. And how you would suggest we monitor locations for accuracy? What's to keep people from showing an incorrect location?

It's irrelevant in this case anyway. Nothing in bustacap's post required a location; the responder either inferred nationality for no particular reason I could see or just wanted to vent some free-floating resentment. Or both, of course.

Just identify the country (or region/state) the answer is for. Someone living there might find it useful.

Never assume the profile location is correct (it might have been once) and there is no reason that people should have to write where they are.

Considering the number of posters who seem surprised that someone is not able to borrow Amazon format ebooks from their local library? Chauvinism works both ways.
