hahaha classic!

I think Kobo have been going off the path for a while now, it seems to be more about numbers than the great paper book experience using an ereader that they used to advertise.

The price difference between the 7" and the 8" is huge. I don't think it was that great when the larger screen option was 6" and 7" but I could be wrong.

From 2027, removable batteries will be mandatory in handheld devices in the EU.
Probably they will redesign all the upcoming models to suit the new law. Let's face it, despite the ifixit stuff and because of the goo inside, even a battery swap is a nightmare.

More than a decade ago you could have waterproof phones with swappable batteries. What we have today is very anti-consumer in all ways.

Hopefully this wil change in the upcoming years.

Maybe Kobo is keeping the 7" BW Reader for 2027.

A bit of quick math says a 7" 3x4 screen has 36% more screen area than a 6" 3x4 and an 8" 3x4 screen has 30% more screen area than a 7" 3x4 screen and 77% more screen area than a 6" 3x4 screen.

I'm making the assumption that an eInk ereader has a 3x4 aspect ratio which is very close to the aspect ratio of most of the ereaders I am aware of.

8" 3x4 screen has a surface area of 30.72 square inches. 4.8" x 6.4"

7" 3x4 screen has a surface area of 23.52 square inches. 4.2" x 5.6"

6" 3x4 screen has a surface area of 17.28 square inches. 3.6" x 4.8"

As it seems, the Kobo Libra Color + Elipsa are now on sale in some selected kobo online shops.
Could this have anything to do with the likely upcoming device updates by Netronix?

The two new devices are going to be a new Clara Colour and a new Clara BW. They are not the devices we actually want which is a new Libra 2 and a new Sage.

Speaking from the other side of the Great Divide, I guess. I want a new 6" reader because it fits in my pocket, is comfortable to read in bed, and doesn't (presumably) have physical buttons--I find those to be a significant point of failure.

My poor Clara HD's battery is on its last legs. I tried the Clara Colour and found it perfectly fine for my needs, except for the miserly 16GB storage. I'm hoping these "new" devices include a storage bump in addition to the battery bump, but are otherwise unchanged.

Why do you need more on a 6″ device? Manga and pdf are inconvenient to read there, the screen is too small. Just wondering.

I get that they want to keep that book-like feel with the tablet form factor, but since phones now average over 6", it’d be more practical if Clara devices switched to the Palma-style form factor and left the tablet-like design behind.

6" phones feel very different because of the aspect ratio. There's a more screen area in a 6" Clara than a 6.5" iPhone Max for example. I don't think most people want the newspaper column-esque thinness of a Palma style device for reading.

The phone aspect ratio is like reading a newspaper column, not a book. By all means have a portable eink too, but most eink are 3:4 aspect and most tablets are 16:9 aspect (though 16:10, 4:3 and 3:2 exist).

It would practically kill eink sales if they didn't have 6 to 8 inch models in 3:4. I had a phone-shaped eink. Gave it away. If I want to read on a phone form factor I have the Nxtpaper 40. Better bettery life and UI for audio than eink.

My 5″ Sony PRS-350 is a nicer portable form factor than any phone. Sadly it and Kobo mini are gone.

It's crazy that Kobo has no 7″ mono and didn't do a cost reduced 8″ instead of Sage (no notes, scrap the 8 magnets, power cover port and slightly larger battery).

To be fair, I like to read on my Libra 2 the most, that's my favorite form factor. But I leave it at home, because if something (bad) happens to it, it's irreplaceable. On the other hand, my phone's screen is a bit larger than my Clara's, and it feels weird to read on it. A phone is more easily pocketable than the Clara, and I really don't care about the "newspaper feeling" as the only thing matters here is the book reading itself. At least >my< thinking is the best reading experience is on E-Ink, the aspect ratio only brings more comfort to the picture - YMMV.

Do you have a photo of your Clara and your phone together? I've never seen a phone with more display area than a Clara, and I'm curious.
