It is so crazy to me because almost none of the magazine / news services offer epub formats which make reading their stuff on an e-reader impossible. I have to use calibre not because I just want the content for free but because there is no other way to conveniently get the content on my devices.

I have been fighting this issue for two days on my Laptop. But I was able to download the Economist as normal on my desktop. So I tried restore, M alwarebytes etc on my laptop.

Then I thought hmmmm... My desktop is old and only has 32 bit Calibre 5.44. My laptop is 64 bit Calibre 8.5. So after reading this thread I just loaded Caliber 5.44 onto my laptop.

Eureka!! It works fine. A few downsides with such an old version but at least I get my weekly read.

I just subscribed to the forum to help others.

That's probably because it uses an older network stack and the economists bot defenses havent yet learned to block it. If enough people use it, it will start getting blocked too. Not really a scaleable fix. I am still hoping I can get the log in working so that users who subscribe can at least get access to it.

At least for the time being, this fixes it, changing the network stack. We'll see if it remains fixed long term or not.

Thanks so much Kovid. Do I have to reinstall Calibre to get the new recipe? I thought it automatically used the latest online version but it's still erroring out for me so obviously I was wrong!

It takes an hour or two before the recipe update goes live.

Is it possible to do the log in process in Calibre, so people have subscription can access it?

Thanks & FYI

Fixed 😁

FYI on another project (yfinance) the following Python has worked reliably to inhibit 404 errors:

from curl_cffi import requests
requests.Session(impersonate="chrome")

Based on the response header having cf_bm, it seems to be cloudflare bot protection.

"Cloudflare Bot Management uses machine learning, behavioral analysis, and fingerprinting to accurately classify bots."
https://www.cloudflare.com/en-ca/app...ot-management/

Cloudflare makes a lot of money from the services they provide so they have developers working on protection that is unique and probably regularly updated. This might be a lot of work for an open source project to work around

It's possible that they're trying to stop actual bots and they're blocking calibre as just a bonus for them too.
