Kobo Libra 2 - Should I convert epub to kepub?
Kobo Libra 2 - Should I convert epub to kepub?
I download epubs, store them in calibre, convert to mobi for very old kindle keyboard, and put the mobi file onto the kobo. They seem to be fine as epub. What happens if I get calibre to convert to keypub? Any benefits or disbenefits? What might I notice when reading? Any other considerations? |

Why put mobi on your Kobo? Mobi support on Kobos is very poor. You can put the original epub on your Kobo as it is. Whether you'd want to use kepub instead of epub is a matter of personal preference. Kepubs are a bit faster and you can zoom images, epubs have better typography and word spacing.

Whole threads (and flame wars) have been started comparing epub and Kepubs. We could rehash the lists of pros of and cons for each, but at the end of day, every individual will have to decide for themselve which they prefer, and the only way to do that is to try both.
But you, sir (or Mam) haved dropped into the fray like the prophesied messiah and brought peace to the warring states. I think just about *everyone* will be in agreement in the file format wars. Putting your epubs on Kobo as a mobi file is just madness. Edit: Just to be clear, unless you are deleting the epub from Calibre after converting to Mobi, calibre preserves the origianal epub. And if yoiu are using Calibre to send books to device, it will actually send the original epub and not the mobi. Last edited by rashkae; 04-01-2025 at 09:48 AM. |

I apologise. I should have proofread my original post.
I put the mobi onto my very old kindle. I put the epub onto my new kobo libre 2. I suppose I could put two versions of the same book on the kobo? One in epub and one in kepub? And then switch back and forth between them to compare? Any advice welcome - now that I've corrected my error. |

You should try both ePub & KePub and decide for yourself which you prefer to read. By default, ePub is going to look better until your tinker with your Kobo. As for Mobi, it should no longer ever exist. |

You might want to look at the Unify Fonts Sizes patch to reduce the annoyance of the default font size between the two renderers.

I use only kepub on my Kobo devices. I just found out that DARK MODE doesn't work on epub-files....I get black on black - a complete black screen. I tested this on the same book - one epub and one kepub.

Only one book? That book might have a font color specified in the css (black). Did you try with another epub?

For what it may be worth, I read mostly ePub since I prefer the font rendering. The only time I've seen black on black using Dark Mode is when some moron specified the text color as black. If you care to, you can use either Sigil or calibre's ebook-editor to look for any of the following in the ePub (text/HTML or CSS stylesheets):
Code:
color: #000000; color: black; color: rgb(0,0,0) |

I know that's a minor thing, but it bothers me so I avoid KePubs. |
