Kindle 4.1.3 can not reregister

I've been looking at using an older Kindle of mine, a 4.1.3 device, to try to force it to d/l anything rather than KFX-ZIP files...

But (i) having deregistered it I can't reregister it (ii) after a bit it pops up a message from Amazon saying words to the effect that as it is so old it won't connect to the Kindle Store anymore - great!.

Also, the time is an hour out (DST) which may be causing issues but I can't see how to re sync it.

Some good Redit threads on this - such as - https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comments/tcps95/unable_to_register_amazon_account_on_kindle_4th/?utm_name=androidcss

So it looks like Amazon have closed off another backup possibility. Bah.

Hey EU, How about going after these companies the deliberately create bulk e-waste by simply locking out ANY service / interop.
You did it for stopping the absurd number of unique chargers.
I understand if it needs replacement for 'Beyond economical repair' or, like cell phones, the supporting cell system has moved generations past your old sack phone. (My K4 is TCP/IP, not whisper sync. so why?)

FWIW I Listen to Music on 60 YO Speakers, on a 25 YO Surround Receiver that still lets me connect Analog or Optical (No HDMI. I have an adapter for that) to Listen to LP's pressed as far back as 1949 on a 50 YO turntable (new stylus and head), Open Reel Tape, CD/DVD/Blue Ray. I ADD, not replace when feasible.

This is how I registered a Kindle Touch (4th gen Kindle).

Register your Kindle from the Kindle. When you get the code texted to your phone, go to register your Kindle again but instead of putting in your password, put in the code. That's what worked for me to get a Kindle Touch registered.

It's no obvious on registering an older Kindle. The I've registered a PW3, PW5, and Kindle (11th gen) and has no problem as registering was just a matter of following the directions.

You should have no problem. Please let us know how your registration went.

Ah - well sort of. If you (like me) are silly enough to deregister it first, then 'settings' reduces to 2 pages. When you register, you get the full 4 pages, and as you say, on Page 2 there is time set.

I had thought that being stuck 1 hr out (DST) of sync was causing the lack of registration, as suggested by Amazon & Redit. Not the case!

[As an aside, registration on my V4 K worked once I understood that my normal Amazon pswd would fail and I needed to use the OTP Amazon sent by SMS. Duh.]

It's not obvious how to register. But now that you know, it's easy.

*Update*
OK, so now with my antique K4.1.3 re-registered, renamed and rebooted a few times, I can now go to the Amazon web site 'Devices' page and force a d/l of various books to my K4.1.3

These turn up when I sync [but I also note an Amazon pop up saying that my K4.1.3 is so ancient it can't connect to the Store any-more. But I can buy book s with another more modern K and then d/l to my 4.1.3 ☺]

They then turn up - it seems - as DRMd .azw3 files. These can then be directly imported into Calibre - and if any have stupid long names remember to set the ENV variable to, say, D:\TMP, - then the usual plugins convert the files to Epub for backup.

This works with books published in June 2025, so now I have 3 ways to back stuff up.

Thanks for all the guidance.

Can you download that eBook with the long filename and see if it's an issue with temp in it's normal place? Thanks.

OK - results:

With a very long file name book, if I d/l it from Amazon using a K4.1.3, then it appears in the K as an azw3. But it also has a short filename. Gobbelino London a Menace of Mer-asin_B0C3YZN5SP-type_EBOK-v_0.azw3

If I do the same with a Gen 12 KPW it has a very long file name - Gobbelino London & a Menace of Mermaids: Cats, snark, & dangerous waters - a complete funny, cozy urban fantasy series (Gobbelino London, PI Book 6)

If I set up Calibre with 'default' TMP dirs, I can happily import the K4.1.3 azw3 with the appropriate plugins.

Interestingly, once in Calibre, the books appears with the very long file name but still converts to Epub.

So in this case (and I've tried this with several very long file name books) using K4.1.3 bypasses the TMP dir issue.

So for the time being this allows me to backup my purchases.

Thanks and good to know you have a way around the long filename problem.
