Excellent Novella on origin of the Cytoverse series universe. Next was Murder on the Dance Floor by Shirley Ballas and Sheila McClure OK, but I found one character's story arc entirely unconvincing. Next up: Storm Furies by Wen Spencer. Another in her Tinker series. |

"What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" written by Alan Moore. It is the last story of the Pre-Crisis Superman. The story takes place 10 years after Superman died, and Lois Elliot (the former Lois Lane) relates how it happened.

Just finished up Percival Everett by Virgil Russel by Percival Everett. I like Everett. His sentences and phrasing just seem to resonate with me regardless of what is actually being said (or what story is being told). But still... he may have been trying to be just a bit too clever with this story inside a story inside a story concept. That might just be me, though.

In an attempt to remain vaguely on topic, my current read is 1635: The Weaver's Code in the 1632 and/or Ring of Fire series. Last edited by DNSB; 06-20-2025 at 01:02 AM.

It was quite interesting, but I wasn't convinced by the technology, nor the characters' interactions with it. But the internal voice of the android was interesting, and I found it very readable. 4/5 Next up was Hot Moon by Alan Smale. From Book Bale. I was hesitant about this at first, but it turned out to be an alternate history of the space race, with lots of action. Fun, and an interesting idea. Also 4/5 Then I read Cory Doctorow's The Lost Cause. Near future SF that is reminiscent, from the other side, of a book described in it, in that it is basically propaganda, but very readable propaganda. I have to give it 5/5, as I was kept awake last night finishing it. Next up: A random bit from the TBR pile: Mrs Pargeter's Plot, by Simon Brett. A cosy mystery.

Reading the novel, The End of the Story, by Lydia Davis. That is THE great Lydia Davis, arguably one of the greatest translators of the modern era. Her novel concerns the obsession her character has for a student who is 12 years younger than she is (but not one of her students). The novel is rich and deep, thoughtful, and 'obsessive' concerning its subject(s). Lydia Davis is a GREAT writer of short stories, flash fictions, and short-short fictions. She is an incredible writer, and I'm only 1/3 into my reading. But be warned, this is Literary Fiction. |

This month: - (the second part of) "Judas Unchained" (2005), by Peter F. Hamilton. - "Planet of the Apes" (1963), by Pierre Boulle. I don't know how much the movies and TV's series did get from its satirical meanings; I'd liked it, but honestly it gives a weird feeling in the guts (but that's was also its purpose imho). *side note, while Planet of the Apes ispired movies and TV's series, "The Forbitten Planet" by Philip MacDonald (mentioned before) was written on the movie's script instead. - "Irontown Blues" (2018), by John Varley. - "The Fountains of Paradise" (1979), by Arthur C. Clarke. As it was on the 70th Anniversary serie, and contains a short-short novel from the Urania Prize (they made it, years ago, to enhanche italian writtens on sci-fi): - "The Final Circle of Paradise" (1965, Wikipedia says its title was also 'Predatory Things of the Century'), by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. * the short story incuded is from Antonella Mecenero. As I don't recall if having read it or not, I'm on this: "The Book of Joan" (2017), by Lidia Yuknavitch Last edited by nana77; 06-25-2025 at 03:47 AM. |
