White Tears by Hari Kunzru is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
**White Tears is a ghost story, a terrifying murder mystery, a timely meditation on race, and a love letter to all the forgotten geniuses of American music and Delta Mississippi Blues.

"An incisive meditation on race, privilege and music. Spanning decades, this novel brings alive the history of old-time blues and America’s racial conscience."—Rabeea Saleem, Chicago Review of Books**

Two twenty-something New Yorkers. Seth is awkward and shy. Carter is the glamorous heir to one of America's great fortunes. They have one thing in common: an obsession with music. Seth is desperate to reach for the future. Carter is slipping back into the past. When Seth accidentally records an unknown singer in a park, Carter sends it out over the Internet, claiming it's a long lost 1920s blues recording by a musician called Charlie Shaw. When an old collector contacts them to say that their fake record and their fake bluesman are actually real, the two young white men, accompanied by Carter's troubled sister Leonie, spiral down into the heart of the nation's darkness, encountering a suppressed history of greed, envy, revenge, and exploitation.

It looks as if someone (the author? someone else?) has gotten the rights to at least the first few books in the Lord Edward Corinth & Verity Browne series by David Roberts, which were previously published by Carroll & Graf. And right now the first three titles, issued by a new publisher, have dropped to $0.99/£0.99 each at Kindle US/UK. The fourth is $2.99/£2.99 and the fifth is on pre-sale at $0.99/£0.99.

Sweet Poison, #1:
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DT21FRL9
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DT21FRL9

Bones of the Buried, #2:
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F1G457M4
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0F1G457M4

Hollow Crown, #3:
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F3J4S8YP
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0F3J4S8YP

The More Deceived, #5
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F8QLF7DK
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0F8QLF7DK

Also note that there used to be an omnibus of the the first four titles in this series that would go on sale from time to time, so check carefully before you buy. And of course, if you have the individual titles from the previous publisher, they won't show up as purchased on the webpage either.

As I mentioned five or six years ago (!!!), I read several of the early titles in this series in DTB, picked up on business trips to the UK, and enjoyed them, but the later titles were mostly a little too expensive in e-book for me. Maybe they'll come out at more reasonable prices now...

The Grey Wolf is the nineteenth and most recent Inspector Gamache book by Louise Penny - at least until The Black Wolf comes out in October. It's on sale right now in the UK for £0.99.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CRDMQG16
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the-grey-wolf-4

Spoiler:
Quote:
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in the small village of Three Pines in Quebec. Someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. When he finally answers the call, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF. At first they seem small - a missing coat, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list - but then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching. A threat unlike anything they've seen before.

Real Tigers is the third in the Slough House series by Mick Herron. It's £0.99 in the UK right now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00X61MZIU
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/real-tigers-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Slough House is the Intelligence Service outpost for failed spies, former high-fliers now dubbed the 'slow horses'. Catherine Standish, one of their number, worked in Regent's Park long enough to understand treachery, double-dealing and stabbing in the back, and she's known Jackson Lamb long enough to have learned that old sins cast long shadows. And she also knows that chance encounters never happen to spooks, even recovering drunks whose careers have crashed and burned.

What she doesn't know is why anyone would target her.

So whoever's holding her hostage, it can't be personal. It must be about Slough House. Most likely, it's about Jackson Lamb. And say what you like about Lamb, he'll never leave a joe in the lurch.

He might even be someone you could trust with your life.

A big batch of Sister Fidelma titles by Peter Tremayne have dropped to £2.99 each at Kindle UK right now. I really really like this series, enough that I made my husband go to Cashel for the weekend a few years ago, when we had a business trip to Ireland. Even though the ruins left there now date from much later than Fidelma's time.

The sale books are kind of scattered throughout the series. Most of these books are $14 and up in the US and rarely go on sale. They are mostly usually £5.49 in the UK, which is way better than $14, but £2.99 is even better! The links pick up all the sale books, but may also pick up a stray or two.

Joffe's Free Friday book, usually good through the weekend, is A Deadly Arrangement, which is the first in the Flower Shop series by Annie Adams. Per its blurb, this is "a revised edition of The Final Arrangement and Pushing Up Daisies". Whatever that means. Two short stories combined? Two previous titles for this same book? Two regular books combined? But in any case, it's free, and you can just go get it if you want it...

Meet Quincy McKay — flower enthusiast turned amateur sleuth!

City girl Quincy is ready for a fresh start in the picturesque town of Hillside, Utah. Finally free of her good-for-nothing ex, she can dedicate her time to setting up her floral boutique.

But those plans come to a halt when the body of a rival florist is discovered in a casket — topped with Quincy’s signature floral arrangement.

The police suspect foul play and Quincy is their prime suspect.

Can Quincy weed out the killer before she is planted in jail?

The eight-book omnibus of Matthew and Joan Stock mysteries is on sale for $1.99/£1.99 right now at Kindle US/UK. That's not quite as nice as back in late 2024, but still pretty darn good. The links in the OP are still good.

And there is also a second omnibus of Tourney’s works on sale right now. This one contains the four books in his Shakespeare series, based on some of Shakespeare’s plays, and with (you guessed it) Will himself as the detective. This one is $0.99/£0.99 in the US/UK, and contains: Time’s Fool, The Conjurer’s Daughter, Falstaff’s Murder, and Catesby’s Ghost. That’s also a nice price even if you already have a couple of them – as I do, although I haven't yet read any in this series.

Elly Griffiths, author of the Ruth Galloway, Magic Men, and Harbinder Kaur series, has started a new series, featuring Ali Dawson (and her colleagues) as time-traveling detectives – dealing with cases so old they have to travel into the past to solve them. I haven’t read The Frozen People yet, but it’s on sale right now for £0.99 at Kindle UK, before it’s even available in the US. It’s not (yet) on sale at Kobo UK, but since it’s only like 4 am in London right now, hopefully Kobo will get the price drop soon.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CW1N9SVD
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the-frozen-people

Spoiler:
Quote:
Ali Dawson and her cold case team investigate crimes so old, they're frozen - or so their inside joke goes. Most people don't know that they travel back in time to complete their research.

The latest assignment sees Ali venture back farther than they have dared before: to 1850s London in order to clear the name of Cain Templeton, the eccentric great-grandfather of MP Isaac Templeton. Rumour has it that Cain was part of a sinister group called The Collectors; to become a member, you had to kill a woman...

Fearing for her safety in the middle of a freezing Victorian winter, Ali finds herself stuck in time, unable to make her way back to her life, her beloved colleagues, and her son, Finn, who suddenly finds himself in legal trouble in the present day.

Could the two cases be connected?

It’s not (yet) on sale at Kobo UK, but since it’s only like 4 am in London right now, hopefully Kobo will get the price drop soon.

It's OK. The SF part of it is, understandably, the weakest.
