Unasked for comments

The epub formatted one looks much nicer but takes a long time turning pages - not within an article or story, but between them. Also, the page numbering on the right of some of the pages is distracting - partly because it changes position, and partly because it sometimes layers over the text.

The lrf isn't quite as pretty, but page turning is a lot quicker! And there's no page numbers on the right.

Both would be very nice with a hyperlinked table of contents.

And finally thank you for introducing me to both the magazine and the website, the link for which I've already passed on to another forum entirely as some of the short stories on it are likely to appeal to them.
Oh, I was definitely hoping for comments...how else am I going to make these things look professional?

I'm not sure what to do about the page numbering problem. Maybe there's a setting in Calibre to make a larger border around the text block?

And excellent point about the hyperlink table of contents. Before I go live with these I'll be sure to add it.

Ahh right - thank you Most of what I've read so far has been lrf, so I've not really noticed before...

Apex Books at Fictionwise and Kindle

I've been invited to come to the board and 'hock' my wares, so to speak. I've been around off and on, mostly with technical questions and pricing questions.

All the Apex Kindle books are priced $4-$5 (not some ridiculous $9.95 business).

All the Apex Fictionwise books are priced $4-$5...a fair price I'm told.

We have a bunch of new titles available since the last time I posted for promotional reasons in here (last January, I believe).

Anyhow, here's links to our books and here's me saying "thank you" for the assistance I've received from Mobileread.com.

I uploaded them via the Amazon DTS service, so I'm not sure if they put DRM on the files or not. I'll look into it.

If you uploaded them as DRMed MOBIs then they will have DRM, otherwise they won't. Typically the best approach for DRM-free AZW is to upload DRM-free MOBIs.

It's "hawk", not "hock" (unless you are planning to pawn them).

Thanks for the info on your latest releases, and for the great pricing at FW. Looks like I know where that Micropay $ is going...

Congrats to Fran on her nomination!

Free PDF of OPEN YOUR EYES by Paul Jessup from Apex Books

Hey all,

We're giving away the PDF version of OPEN YOUR EYES by Paul Jessup until the end of May.

http://www.apexbookcompany.com/wp-co...enYourEyes.zip

It's a work of surreal space opera. Below are some blurbs.

“Open Your Eyes is surrealistic space opera in the tradition of New
Wave experimentalism, echoing the fantastic imagery of Samuel R.
Delany and the angst-ridden identity paranoia of Philip K. Dick, all
bound together in a distinctly modern vision of a post-technological
future bereft of a human core. Jessup’s bone spaceships and
resurrecting crews tumble into the core of a mystery which is
consuming the very hearts of suns. Go along for the ride, and open
your eyes.
–Jay Lake, author of Escapement and Green

“With unique imagination at work, Open Your Eyes bombards the reader
with stunning imagery, from living spaceships to mechanical
butterflies.”
–Ekaterina Sedia, author of Alchemy of Stone

Evocative, moving, elegiac, and sometimes surreal, Jessup’s Open Your
Eyes is a space opera novella that lives and breathes in the 21st
century. It blends together the best of fast-paced adventure and
intriguing characters. Open Your Eyes is truly a nova in the science
fiction universe.
–Alan DeNiro, author of Skinny Dipping in the Lake of the Dead

Another publisher and/or author who really doesn't get eBooks. It's a real shame.

it is, at that. pdf is probably my least favorite format, and an actual plot description would have been handier.

Apex Publications is proud to announce today is the release date for Open Your Eyes by Paul Jessup. This is book #4 in our acclaimed novella series.

Her lover was a supernova who took worlds with him when he died, and as a new world grows within Ekhi, savage lives rage and love on a small ship in the outer reaches of space. A ship with an agenda of its own. Critically acclaimed author of weird fiction Paul Jessup sends puppets to speak and fight for their masters while a linguistic virus eats through the minds of a group of scavengers in Open Your Eyes, a surrealist space opera of haunting beauty and infinite darkness.
This is book 4 in a series. Seems silly to me to give away #4 when #1 would be better.
