No idea, and given that it's a novel and these are just character images, not anything requiring long, close inspection, I hardly think it matters.

No. The UK edition has DRM, so I have no copy outside calibre.

They could quite easily be lossless if the images are greyscale.

Maps are fairly useless in ebooks, in my experience, and the other images don't seem important, so the big file size seems like unnecessary bloat.

Calibre does not change the images in the original eBook format. So those images are as they came from Gollancz. I did a preview from eBooks.com and it is indeed missing the color images (other then the cover and the advert).

I agree the images don't need to be that large. But they are part of the book. The images are not lossless as they are JPEG.
