Check the recommended list from IFDB for the best interactive fiction. (just keep in mind that twine games don't work on Gargoyle)
There are also lists with games recommended for beginners. Some of the games I started with are: - Dreamhold (classic fantasy setting, easy for beginners) - Bronze (Beauty and the Beast remix) - Violet (I could relate to it, writing my PhD) - Counterfeit Monkey (highly recommended, visit the island of linguistics)* - 9:05 (short and fun story) - Coloratura (see the earth from the point of view of an alien) * Small hint for Counterfeit Monkey on Kindle: the map (on by default) takes up half of the (not so big) screen. Turn it off with "map off" command. You can turn it back on if needed. With IF games it's a good idea to take notes and draw maps while playing. And start with beginner-friendly games, as the more advanced games can have frustratingly complicated puzzles to solve. Last edited by kbarni; 04-28-2025 at 04:35 AM. |

Thanks so much. Right after making that post I briefly checked the IF-related subreddits and yeah, that site is massive and looks really useful! What a gem.
I love seeing the posts you've made here so far! If I have any feedback or ideas for new/updated extensions I'll be sure to drop them around here! I'm new to the forum but I always have loved e-ink devices and tinkering with things (not as a programmer but as a curious user). Hopefully I can also slowly ease into interactive fiction more as someone who typically just plays standard video games but always extremely enarmored with retro things (including IF and its links to pre-point and click video games and all the ties to computer & game history in general) and wanting to catch up on things my generation has probably largely if not entirely missed out on for many years. I have some medical conditions that include a history of considerable chronic pain & strain especially around the eye region, so taking advantage of e-ink screens more as I take breaks from the brighter screens around me will be useful, I'm sure. I wonder how many people here end up thinking it's wise to use their devices at least partly due to medical reasons, tbh It'll be exciting to see any new extensions (or ones being tweaked to actually run on the newer versions) that'll be useful, entertaining, funny just to run on a Kindle, etc. I'm sure you'll have some users welcoming it with open arms. Just to see it run is fun in itself, IMO. It's like running a weird application on a modded Nintendo 3DS, it's neat to see it run Last edited by PigDan; 04-28-2025 at 05:10 AM. |

Hi there,
I just wanted to say that I really love this — it’s one of the coolest Kindle projects I’ve seen in a while! Unfortunately, my Kindle is running firmware 5.16.2.1.1, which is just below the cut-off. I was wondering if there's any chance you could recompile Gargoyle to support slightly older firmware? Or is there a specific technical reason it only works on 5.16.3 and up? Thanks so much for your time — and for all the awesome work you've done on this project. It’s seriously impressive. All the best, Robert |

Gargoyle is compiled for Kindle firmware supporting hard float (hardware floating point) AKA hf which requires firmware 5.16.3 or higher.

The first post on this thread includes a link to the thread of the earlier version, which will run on pre-5.16.3 firmware with softfloat. This thread is specific only to the kindlehf build.
