You can fix that by installing the DevCerts update.

I have been afraid to update the firmware because of the problems I understand are caused by > 5.6, but if that is the best option, I will do that. Thank you chaitanyaI for sharing your experience, and thank you to NiLuJe and everyone else who has contributed to these wonderful tools!
I went ahead and updated directly from 5.3.3 to 5.6.1 and everything works fine. Thanks for all the help here!

This worked for me on Kindle 4, no touch (K4NT) 4.1.4 firmware. Thank you!

Had to get creative, so, hopefully this doesn't break on old devices.

Here's a completely untested DevCerts build that *should* update your on-device keystore (and *only* that)...

Hello, it works, but if I open KUAL it says that I need to download the Kindle Kit. The problem is that if I try to download the Mobileread Kindle Kit the previous certificates that I installed don't work.

Certificate problem even on a new, clean install

Hi all, I am new to the forum but successfully jail broke and used Kindle 4's without problems for some years until the certificate expired.

I tried updating the certificate using the utility and by copying developer.keystore to /var/local/java/keystore/developer.keystore.

This didn't solve the problem so I used Kubrick Live CD to jailbreak and reformat a Kindle K4 non-touch to try a new install using the latest snapshot. Enabled airplane mode and used the following to install KUAL, running updates from the Kindle menu

-Update_mkk-20141129-k4-ALL_install.bin from kindle-mkk-20141129-r18833.tar.xz to root and updated from Kindle menu

-Copied mrpackages and extensions to root directory from kual-mrinstaller-1.7.N-r19303.tar.xz to root and KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 from KUAL-v2.7.37-gfcb45b5-20250419.tar.xz to documents folder.

-Update_KUALBooklet_hotfix_v2.7.37_install.bin from kindle-jailbreak-1.16.N-r18474.tar.xz

-Update_mkk-20250419-k4-ALL_keystore-install.bin from DevCerts-20250419-KeyStore.zip

Still cannot run KUAL, still get the same error message.

Very grateful for any advice and help, this has really frustrated me!

Does your K4 have the latest firmware installed, version 4.1.4?

For some reason, the new KUAL/keystore doesn't work if your firmware is not up to date.

Thanks so much SpartanHeavy, you were spot on!

The K4 was on 4.1.1 so I just updated by stages to 4.1.4 and then ran the developer.keystore update utility and all's working.

I also realized I didn't need to install booklets on K4.

Location of developer.keystore

One more question if I may

When using the earlier version I had to make /var/local/java/keystore/developer.keystore immutable to stop it being updated.

Having updated the firmware and KUAL etc. that file does not exist.

Is this still necessary and should I be looking for it in another location?

Thanks for any help or advice on this.

Ignore this, the file now exists and I have made it immutable, so all good for now.

How to downgrade: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=264432

Thanks to NiLuJE, all the other developers, chaitanyal, and possumbly_human! You're all amazing.
Downgraded to 5.3.3, redid everything and it worked, thanks a lot (:

K2 issues

Has anyone with a K2 gotten this to work with the new certs? I also noticed that on my K2, the message is "The application is not signed by a registered developer" instead of the "title" like everyone else's is showing.

Is this an issue with the K2 and DX only having firmware versions up to 2.5.4? maybe doesn't include the algorithms needed for the new dev certs?

Let me know if there's any information that I can provide to help troubleshoot.

Thanks!
