Given that this may be originally a Kindle eBook, it could be that the embedded fonts are obfuscated. I wonder if this would work as an ePub and not a KePub.

Progress, I dragged/dropped the 'raw' epub files onto the device - the text does show up, but the formatting is a mess. The pictures are too large, the text is too small, etc. But progress, thanks!

The solution may be to buy the eBook form Kobo if available to send it to your Kobo as KePub.

What is the eBook?

I think you might be right in this case, it's a beginner-reader series called the Princess in Black (about 9 books, which is why I'm hesitant to re-buy), but I swapped the kids to Kobos a while back and trying to get stuff over via Calibre and Calibre-Web.

Examaning the book it would appear the actual fonts are included in it, with internal names 00001.otf and 00002.otf. 00001.otf is actually LTCKennerleyPro and 00002..otf is LTCKennerleyPro-Italic

And they are most likely obfuscated. So they may not work as KePub. I don't know if they'll work as ePub.

One possible solution is to remove the fonts and remove the references to the fonts.

Would the idea be to somehow copy these to the device? For whatever reason despite being in the book they aren't showing properly on the device
