Looking at the v5 firmware for the new tolino ereaders, they have retained RMSDK to allow for ADEPT DRM. Given the use of ADEPT DRM by libraries and other retailers, I find it highly doubtful that Kobo will discontinue the use of ADEPT DRM in the near future. One other thing to note is that the majority of the books I've purchased from Kobo are DRM free (in my library, I have 178 Kobo books with DRM and 763 without).

It worked. The process was a little confusing but simple and resulted in a epub. The epub size is much bigger than the epub that I got from downloading the book to one of my older Kindles, transferring to Calibre and using KFX input to convert. I haven't tried to look at the differences. FWIW: the BookFab converter provides an interesting message before it begins the download: it says that "download has now been authorized".

The other major difference is that BookFab produces an EPUB3 ebook while the Calibre route produces EPUB2.

2 things. kindle for pc needs to be opened when converting. I think it only works with version 2 and upwards. so 2.3 or 2.4 . seems like a beta software. it did work for me and was quick. not sure why it needs 40 gig yet. comes in color and is smaller then kindle version.

I'm confused why you're worrying about future changes by Amazon / Kobo / etc. Don't you continuously remove the DRM from your books? And if any vendor changes their DRM-scheme, that maybe cannot defeated anymore, I don't care because my existing books are already fine, and I can go to any other vendor that still uses older DRM-schemes, or don't use DRM in the first place.
