It's not supposed to be K4BNT. It's supposed to be K5NT. The color doesn't get abbreviated.

I think what always confused me...in part...is the wiki entry for kindle models by serial number. Which says:

B023, 9023 Kindle 4 NoTouch Black (2012) K4, K4B

Mine does start with the 9023 serial number. But since the Amazon page someone linked to does call the black model a 5th gen, I suppose I should start calling it a K5NT.

We know what K4NT or K4BNT means. That's all that counts. No one cares what the "correct" abbreviation is (besides you).

And there is a K4NT, of course - the grey one. Uses the same firmware as the black one, 4th gen.

I was partially incorrect. The correct abbreviations are K4NT and K5NT.

Actually in this case it is a good way. There is a K4NT and a K5NT. What's different I have no idea. But at least you'd know which one it was. And there's no other Kindle having the color in the abbreviation which is why K4BNT is just plain wrong.

No, it is not good. K4 and K5 have different hardware and different firmware. The first kindle touch is the K5. Both the silver and black non touch kindles are K4. They do have different serial number prefixes. There are multiple kindles where KindleTool support indirectly depends on color.

The Kindle Touch is a 4th Gen Kindle.

They are the K4NT and K5NT. Nothing needs to be based on the color.

Calling 4th generation hardware 5th generation is confusing. All 5th generation kindles have touchscreens.

As you can see in the screen grab from Amazon, they are the ones calling the black NT a 5th gen device. K4NT is graphite and the K5NT is black.

Also, Amazon calls the Kindle Touch a 4th Gen device.
