I've been thinking about this point since the DX was announced yesterday.

Either Amazon will need to do a firmware update to include DRM pdf (textbook publishers will not be selling their books without DRM) or they may require the publishers to use a different format for their ebooks.

Using a different format for ebooks would raise another question. Would these publishers create say an .azw format from the original pdf and if so what level of proof-reading will be involved to verify the final product? If one were to convert a textbook from pdf to any other format, imagine the amount of errors that could occur.

The average number of years to complete an undergraduate degree is slightly more than 5. But the comments about cost would be key ones for my students (at a public university). Most start by looking to buy used copies of textbooks and many of them share textbooks. A few try to avoid buying a copy at all. Unless the cost of the e-version is less than the cost of a used copy, I doubt there will be much interest. And that's not taking into consideration other issues such as highlighting and commenting on pdfs.

Are we thinking that the students won't have the option of using these PDF textbooks on both a laptop and the DX? Maybe the annotations would be made on a computer and that copy would be on the Kindle for quick reference (along with the .azw or .mobi textbooks).

My college days were pre-laptop (or home desktop), so my thinking may be way off.

I would think that the PDF would also work fine on their PC. If they end up with Adobe DRM on the PDF it will still work on the PC. Adobe DRM is for the person, not the device. However if it is convert to Topaz it will only work on the device.

For students that work the way I did, the KDX will have to be able to keep 2-5 books in a "cool-key" mode. I had to switch between books for a single class often, and from class to class every hour or two.

I like the way the EBW1150 allows me to switch between two books without going back to the main menu, which breaks concentration, and I think you'd need something like that for reader meant to be used for study.

Even better would be a split screen. But fast keys would be helpful as well. I use the switch on my EB-1150.

The article most definitely did not mis on that point. The article pointed out that it is not a dilemma between a "bag of books" and Kindle, the dilemma is "why have Kindle when I already need a laptop".

IMHO, Kindle DX is still a very poor substitute for laptop.

It's just a durable as any of the current crop of e-ink readers. The most vulnerable area is the screen and as with all readers if you use a good cover you shouldn't have any problems.

One additional 'benefitor' (is that a word?), will be those with poor eyesight who need to use large fonts. Apparently the Kindle sells very well to older people, so the additional screen size will be a blessing to them.

I disagree, the Kindle DX has much more glass real estate and is more vulnerable than the current crop of readers, possibly has more flex, the larger size may subject it more easily to be knocked off a desk or having something dropped onto it. Student use is much different than a home environment

You wrote *A Kindle*, so I took it to mean all Kindles in general. The DX probably is more susceptible to screen breakage due to size (just like the iRex line) but I still contend a good cover will will go a long way to protect it. Hopefully they will treat them with respect.

And a padded bag to carry it in will definitely help as well.

You're suggest the laptop can substitute as an ereader. But it can't, because it doesn't have the battery life, and long-term reading on one can cause eyestrain.

So you're carrying a laptop around whether you have physical books or an ebook reader.
